Nuclear Engineer III or Senior Nuclear Engineer – Material Engineer

Summary

This position will report to the Manager of Steam Generator Maintenance and Engineering in the Corporate Engineering Group and will be located in the Environmental Center at the McGuire Nuclear site.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design/direct laboratory failure analysis investigations of power plant (nuclear, fossil, hydroelectric) and various other metallic and non-metallic components.
  • Develop positive working relationships and clearly communicate with plant engineers.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to laboratory technicians.
  • Provide thorough and accurate documentation of lab results.
  • Provide consulting support to plants on materials and corrosion issues.
  • Assist plant engineers with communicating lab results to regulatory agencies when requested.
  • Represent the company positively and professionally.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Nuclear Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master 's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • 4-6 years of engineering experience.

Sr Nuclear Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical or Materials Engineering, or Materials Science
  • North and South Carolina Professional Engineer Certifications.
  • Experience with analysis methods such as metallography, mechanical testing, electron microscopy and various spectroscopic techniques, as well as interpretation of metallographic and fractographic evidence.
  • Computer proficient with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Effective problem solving and analytical ability with demonstrated written/oral communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple assignments.
  • Strong personal commitment maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Comfortable working with radioactively contaminated materials.
  • General understanding of non-metallic materials analysis methods including FTIR.
  • Knowledge of nuclear, fossil, and hydroelectric power plant systems.
  • Familiarity with welding processes and materials, especially as pertaining to ASME Code Section IX.

Special Requirements

  • In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified. 
  • Able to achieve nuclear site access
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
  • Additional hours expected as workload/business need requires.

Working Conditions

  • The working environment consists of on-site work at a metallurgical laboratory with an accompanying radiological hot cell for contaminated metallurgical samples.
