DescriptionThe Queen's Space Engineering Team (QSET) is a large multi-disciplinary team consisting of students from all engineering disciplines, in addition to the Faculty of Arts and Science. QSET designs a prototype Mars Rover for participation in the University Rover Challenge (for more information please visit urc.marssociety.org/home).If selected as the Mechanical Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, and testing of all the mechanical systems on QSET’s Rover projects. The Mechanical Manager is responsible for managing a team of 20 - 50+ students and will complete the design, construction, and testing required for all mechanical systems on the rover. The successful applicant will work closely with the Rover CTO and the other technical managers to coordinate designs between subsystems and support other sub-teams in their design endeavors where required. In order to keep updated with project, the Mechanical Manager must coordinate and attend weekly meetings with sub-teams. Throughout the year they will communicate with local machine shops to coordinate the manufacturing of components for the mechanical systems. The incoming manager can structure their team as they see fit and are encouraged to assign strong team members as project/sub-team leads to increase accountability. Note: The incoming Mechanical Manager will typically focus on one main subsystem for their design cycle, in addition to improving existing components, and smaller design projects.</li><li>Coordinate the manufacturing of any components designed by the mechanical sub-team.</li><li>Lead initial planning and preparing efforts over the summer to create project timelines, sub-team budgets, training material, and team resources for the mechanical sub-team.</li><li>Attend all relevant executive team, rover executive team, and sub-team meetings.</li><li>Work with the captain, Rover CTO, and supervisors to define specific roles and responsibilities of the supervisors.</li><li>Prepare training material as necessary to help support member onboarding and development.</li><li>Organize and chair weekly sub-team meetings and or attend sub-team meetings chaired by supervisors.</li></ul>Requirements<ul><li>Experience with project management and leadership. Interpersonal skills are an asset.</li><li>Critical thinking and decision making, with a passion for engineering and design.</li><li>Good organization and time management.</li><li>Understanding of the basic principles of mechanical design (failure modes, material selection, design by user requirements, etc.).</li><li>Competency in Finite Element Analysis and Topology Optimization.</li><li>Significant experience with SolidWorks Computer-Aided Design.</li><li>Experience creating technical drawings for manufacturing.</li><li>Effective communication.</li></ul>
