About the Job

Remora is hiring an Electrical Controls System Engineer to design, develop, and execute the control systems and power distribution architecture for our mobile carbon capture device. This role is central to developing PID controllers, designing PLC-based automation, selecting and integrating electrical hardware, and ensuring overall system performance from concept to deployment.

We're building carbon capture for trains and trucks. We generate revenue for railroads and trucking companies by extracting, purifying, and selling CO2 from their exhaust. Our technology can capture up to 90% of the CO2 in the vehicle's exhaust, while also reducing soot, particulate matter, and NOx.

We've partnered with some of the largest railroads and trucking companies, including Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern, Ryder, and Werner. We've now raised $117 million from prominent investors, including Lowercarbon Capital, Valor Equity Partners, Union Square Ventures, First Round Capital, and Y Combinator.

Responsibilities:

Plan & Develop

  • Define control system architecture, including PID-based control strategies for pressure, temperature, and flow regulation.
  • Plan power distribution and protection schemes across system components.
  • Select control hardware—PLCs, sensors, actuators, and power electronics.

Execute

  • Program PLCs (e.g., Omron/Sysmac) using ladder logic or structured text.
  • Develop and tune PID control loops; validate through HIL and bench testing.
  • Lead system commissioning, including calibration, debugging, and performance verification.

Collaborate

  • Work with mechanical, electrical, and software teams for system integration.
  • Coordinate with suppliers for hardware procurement and technical compliance.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide regular technical updates.

Design

  • Create electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts.
  • Design, develop and document control logic, system requirements, and safety protocols.
  • Apply industry standards for reliability, safety, and scalability.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in control system design, PLC programming, and power distribution systems.
  • Strong expertise in PID control development, real-time system tuning, and dynamic response optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with PLC programming (Omron/Sysmac preferred), HMI development, and industrial automation.
  • Proficiency in hardware selection, including sensors, actuators, power components, and communication protocols (EtherCAT, CAN, Modbus, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience with electrical schematics, panel design, and safety-critical system integration.
  • Familiarity with system testing methodologies, including HIL and real-world performance validation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in mobile machinery, heavy-duty vehicles, or industrial systems.
  • Background in high voltage/power systems with knowledge of protection strategies.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink or similar tools for control simulation and tuning.
  • Knowledge of functional safety standards (SIL, ISO 13849) and regulatory compliance.
  • Hands-on experience with SCADA systems, including system design, configuration, and integration for real-time monitoring and control of industrial processes; familiarity with protocols such as Modbus, OPC, or DNP3; and experience troubleshooting communications and ensuring system reliability and security.
  • Experience in fast-paced or startup environments, especially developing first-of-its-kind technologies.

Logistics:

  • Location: Wixom, MI
  • Start date: Immediately.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary: $117,000 - $180,000
  • Competitive Stock Options
  • Healthcare (Aetna)
  • Dental

  • Parental leave
  • Unlimited sick and compassionate leave
  • Employee development and coaching
  • Office setup (remote) or relocation (in-person) stipend
