Your Opportunity

One Permanent Full Time Position

Working as a Sr. Gas Trader involves managing the gas portfolio strategy, achieving trading targets, and working closely with the power trading teams. The ideal candidate should have strong analytical skills, experience in natural gas trading, and the ability to thrive in high-pressure situations.

You will contribute to our team by:

  • Working towards delivering $500-$800M of annual AESO portfolio EBITDA, including incremental trading targets that range from $15M to $30M/year
  • Proprietary trading across US gas regions
  • Managing ~250TJ/d of gas transport to ensure gas deliverability to our assets
  • Modeling North American (and abroad) daily quantitative and fundamental analysis of gas markets, locational basis, transport, storage, weather, etc. to support Canadian and US T&O
  • Taking analytics, experience and other key factors into account to formulate and analyze portfolio strategy to ensure Capital Power is optimizing risk and return;         
  • Ensuring strategy-based coordination across the portfolio (Real-Time, Cash, Term, Asset, Structured Products) to the extent required;
  • Valuing and pricing of Origination deals
  • Running daily P&L models
  • Proactively communicating market and portfolio changes to leadership
  • Consolidating innovative recommendations into implementation plans; providing breakthrough ideas and practical solutions that are in alignment with the vision of the organization;
  • Assist in the evolution and executing the Long-Term Hedging Plan across the 2-10-year+ horizon
  • Actively share knowledge, understanding, and communicating relevant pipeline toll structures and changes;
  • Lending support to portfolio commercial interests and corporate business development initiatives;
  • Being an active team member within the Trading team, with related stakeholders and supporting corporate values by demonstrating a positive attitude, acting with integrity and working collaboratively and respectfully with others.
  • Abiding by and actively monitoring all applicable risk, credit, process-based policies and procedures;
  • Providing input into regulatory files such as AECO and abroad market items like gas tariff structure and cost

What you will bring to the role:

Education:

  • Minimum a bachelor degree in engineering, economics, computer science, finance and / or mathematics
  • Preference towards graduate degrees, CFA, FRM or other financial designation holders

Experience:

  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience of profitable natural gas trading and / or gas scheduling activity across North American Natural Gas markets with a focus on Henry Hub and AECO;
  • Experience with physical gas, gas scheduling, asset optimization/hedging, structured products and options;

Technical Skills:

  • Experience managing portfolios comprised of diverse asset and proprietary positions;
  • An advanced understanding of finance, portfolio theory, risk management principles and statistics.
  • Advanced application skills related to MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, PowerBI).
  • Previous experience with gas scheduling would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to gather, collate, and analyze large amounts of data using Python, R, and other languages/toolsets. Application of algorithmic methods / machine learning would be considered an asset.

Working Conditions:

  • 4-days a week in the office, Mon – Thurs. May require 5-days a week in the office along with some odd hours and weekend work depending on the season and what is happening in the portfolio.

This position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.
