About the Job

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to design, develop, and oversee mechanical and electro-mechanical systems. In this role, you will use FEM software, CAD tools, and hand calculations to create and refine designs, generate technical drawings, and lead skilled technicians in building and testing systems. The ideal candidate has experience with hazardous systems, control systems, and industry standards like ASME and AISC.

Arbor’s team of world-class engineers and scientists are developing a scalable, low-cost approach to Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) based on modern rocket engine technology. BECCS is a carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approach that uses biomass to produce energy and remove CO₂ from the atmosphere and store it permanently underground, while ensuring food security, rural livelihoods, and biodiversity are not affected. Our modular technology leverages the power density of supercritical CO2 to enable compact gasification, oxy-combustion, and high-pressure turbo-expansion to convert abundant waste biomass into clean electricity, water, and high-purity CO2, capturing and sequestering all emissions from the process. Our team brings together a passion for science, technology, and global stewardship to make low-cost, high-quality carbon removal and baseload power a reality.

Responsibilities

 • Own the development of multiple mechanical and electro-mechanical systems
 • Use FEM software and hand calculations to design and build mechanical systems for energy generation.
 • Create drawings and work instructions for system design and construction.
 • Collaborate with and guide technicians in building and testing mechanical systems.
 • Improve and refine the mechanical systems under your responsibility.

Requirements

 • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
 • 3+ years of experience as a mechanical engineer.
 • Proficiency in CAD and FEA software.
 • Must work on-site at headquarters in El Segundo, CA.
 • Willing to travel (up to 20%) to the test site in San Bernardino, CA for operational activities and builds.

Preferred Qualifications

 • Experience working with hazardous systems (high pressure, high energy, hazardous gases/fluids).
 • Familiarity with SOLIDWORKS, Siemens NX, or similar CAD software.
 • Experience using ANSYS or similar finite element analysis tools.
 • Knowledge of control systems for remote operations and instrumentation feedback.
 • Familiarity with engineering standards such as ASME B31.3, ASME BPV Code Section VIII, and AISC 360.
 • Experience with root cause analysis.
 • Ability to prioritize and perform well under pressure.
 • Strong communication and presentation skills.

In order for humanity to progress and thrive, we must appreciate Earth as the spaceship it is. Our atmosphere, and the diverse ecosystems it sustains, are our vital life support system against an otherwise inhospitable space. Equipped with an astronaut mindset, we treat our natural resources as precious and human kindness as essential.

Arbor is developing a scalable and low-cost approach to reverse humanity’s climate footprint, leveraging advanced rocket engine technology and Earth’s own natural rhythms. We are designing, manufacturing, and operating systems that will restore balance to the planet and set the foundation for a global circular economy. Our technology converts waste into clean energy and fresh water, while permanently removing CO2 from the atmosphere. We're using the same technology developed to get humans off the Earth to now help us save it.
