Summary
This position is specific to the Oconee Nuclear Station (ONS), located in Seneca, South Carolina. The experienced Simulator Engineer will interface with product and development teams for understanding and executing the overall program vision for the Oconee Nuclear Power Plant Simulator. This position will work with Duke Energy’s internal application framework environment in the development of engineering applications, support maintenance and testing of existing applications, interface with discipline engineers to support development and execution of functional requirements, and develop scope, schedule and cost of new applications or releases of existing applications.
This position is responsible for all programming and associated hardware connectivity to ensure 100% alignment and fidelity of the training simulator with the actual station, and to ensure NRC simulator acceptance. Additional responsibilities include:
- designs, tests and implements code for new software installation.
- repairs simulator deficiencies and improves the simulator performance as needed.
- maintains neutronics and thermo-hydraulics and modeling software of the plant systems.
- serves as the code and system administrator for simulator software, interfaces and provides consultation/guidance to plant engineering on design change needs, plant computer systems issues and schedule of maintenance and upgrades.
- implements and maintains structured software design and develop processes which includes software configuration, model verification, validation testing, technical procedures, and software documentation.
- serves as the subject matter expert for company and vendor engineering staff to obtain necessary design data for simulator models.
- serves as point of contact for simulator software issues, modifications, and maintenance.
- provides technical expertise and instruction to lower-level positions.
- eliminates the impact of errors that would result in significant costs and have major impact to station operations.
- performs other duties as requested or assigned.
This position requires high individual motivation to solve complex analytical problems and plant issues that impact simulator functionality. Due to the diversity of assignments within the team, a continuous learning aptitude is required. This position also requires performance within a team-oriented environment that is very customer focused.
Responsibilities
- Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
- Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team.
- Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
- Conducts engineering related studies.
- Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces.
- Displays increasing competency to troubleshoot, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
- Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures, proficient in technical and analytical competencies.
- Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
- Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
- Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
- Supports extended shift hours during refueling or maintenance outages.
- Accommodates emergent work and effectively multi-tasks while keeping supervisor informed.
- Develops and maintains effective working relationships with other groups
- Safely performs field work in an industrial facility, which could include climbing ladders and lifting objects >25 lbs.
Basic / Required Qualifications
Nuclear Engineer III
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- A Master 's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
- 4-6 years of engineering experience
- Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
Sr Nuclear Engineer
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- A Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
- Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer
- Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering
- Professional Engineer license
- Previous/Current SRO License or Certification
- Demonstrated knowledge and application of C++ programming language.
- Demonstrated knowledge and application Fortran programming language.
Specific Requirements
- In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
- Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.
- This position is required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed in office and plant environments.
- Additional hours expected as workload/business need requires.
- Hybrid Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the Oconee Nuclear Station as required for ERO responsibilities.
Working Conditions
- Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
- Typical schedule 4-day week
- Hybrid Mobility Classification (2 days onsite, 2 days remote)
