About the Job

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Transportation Compliance Specialist to join our corporate team. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and implementing corporate guidelines, policies, and processes to ensure compliance with transportation safety and compliance regulations across Canada and the United States. You will work closely with area compliance departments, fleet operations, safety teams and operations business units to ensure regulatory consistency, maintain compliance standards, and drive continuous improvement in transportation safety processes.

Key Responsibilities:

Policy Development & Compliance Oversight:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain corporate transportation compliance policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure adherence to federal, provincial, state, and municipal regulations in Canada and the U.S.
  • Regularly review and update policies based on legislative and regulatory changes, including FMCSA, DOT, MTO, SAAQ, NSC, CVSA, and Transport Canada regulations.
  • Ensure GFL business units maintain proper documentation and adhere to all compliance requirements related to driver qualifications, vehicle inspections and maintenance, Hours of Service (HOS), and Drug & Alcohol Testing (where applicable).
  • Collaborate with legal and fleet teams to provide compliance guidance for operations, safety, and logistics.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Training:

  • Work closely with the fleet compliance department to standardize transportation compliance processes across GFL business units.
  • Develop and deliver compliance training programs for drivers, supervisors, fleet managers, and operational leadership, covering topics such as Hours of Service, vehicle inspections, driver fitness, and regulatory updates.
  • Act as a liaison with regulatory agencies (FMCSA, DOT, MTO, SAAQ, Transport Canada, CVSA) for audits, inspections, and compliance inquiries.
  • Maintain open communication with operations teams to provide guidance on regulatory requirements and ensure alignment with corporate safety and compliance objectives.

Risk Management & Auditing:

  • Monitor and assess compliance risks related to transportation activities across all business units.
  • Conduct internal compliance audits to assess adherence to regulations, identify compliance gaps, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Analyze and interpret telematics, GPS, and ELD data to ensure compliance with Hours-of-Service regulations and driver behavior dashboards.
  • Track compliance trends and provide regular reports to leadership with key insights and recommendations for process improvements.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a corporate-wide transportation compliance dashboard to track key compliance metrics.

Incident Investigation & Continuous Improvement:

  • Investigate compliance violations, accidents, and near-miss incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with safety teams to develop proactive risk mitigation strategies and preventive measures to enhance transportation compliance.
  • Support the development and implementation of fleet safety initiatives aimed at reducing violations, improving CSA and NSC scores, and ensuring safe operations.
  • Work with fleet maintenance teams to ensure vehicles are properly inspected, maintained, and in compliance with federal and provincial/state requirements.

Qualifications:

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in transportation compliance or a related field, with a strong understanding of North American transportation safety regulations.
  • Experience working in a corporate environment with multi-jurisdictional regulatory oversight.
  • Knowledge of ELD compliance, Hours of Service regulations, and vehicle safety requirements in both Canada and the U.S.
  • Previous experience interacting with regulatory agencies, conducting audits, and managing compliance programs is preferred.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of federal, provincial, and state transportation regulations (FMCSA, DOT, MTO, SAAQ, NSC, Transport Canada, CVSA).
  • Exceptional communication skills (both written and verbal) to engage effectively with internal teams, external stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to communicate in French would be an asset.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities to assess complex compliance issues and recommend solutions.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects, audits, and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in compliance management software, telematics platforms (Geotab, Samsara, Lytx or similar), Google (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail, Gemini) and/or Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Copilot).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating high initiative, accountability, and adaptability.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Transportation Safety Professional (CTSP), Certified Director of Safety (CDS), or similar industry certification is a plus.
  • Experience managing compliance with drug and alcohol testing programs for CDL drivers in the U.S. (FMCSA Clearinghouse).
  • Familiarity with transportation permit requirements, hazardous materials regulations, and vehicle registration compliance.
