About the Job
We are seeking an experienced Automotive Stamping Quality Manager to oversee and manage the quality control and assurance processes in an automotive stamping environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in surface quality, metrology, GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), exterior sheet metal manufacturing, engineering principles, metallurgy and developing a Quality Assurance System. This role requires the ability to develop and implement strategies to ensure the production of high-quality stamped parts.
You Will:
- Quality Control & Assurance: Lead and manage the quality control functions to ensure that all stamped parts meet customer specifications
- Surface Quality Management: Oversee the inspection of stamped surfaces to ensure they meet appearance and functional requirements, including proper finishing and surface integrity
- Metrology & Measurement Systems: Utilize advanced metrology tools to perform measurements and inspections. Ensure the accuracy of measurement systems, and lead efforts to implement SPC (Statistical Process Control) where applicable
- GD&T Expertise: Apply knowledge of GD&T to interpret and communicate engineering drawings, ensuring the design specifications are properly translated into the stamping process
- Process Optimization: Analyze stamping processes to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions. Work closely with engineering teams to optimize tooling, presses, and workflows
- External Sheet Metal Expertise: Apply expertise in exterior sheet metal parts production, addressing challenges such as dimensional accuracy, surface defects, and material flow in stamping operations
- Supplier & Vendor Coordination: Collaborate with suppliers to ensure quality standards are met for raw materials
- Team Leadership & Development: Lead a team of quality engineers, supervisors and technicians, providing training and mentorship on quality assurance practices and continuous improvement processes
- Troubleshooting & Root Cause Analysis: Lead investigations into product quality issues, conducting root cause analysis, and implementing corrective actions to resolve defects and prevent recurrence
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed records of quality control activities, including inspections, tests, audits, and corrective actions. Prepare regular quality reports for upper management and customers
- Compliance & Standards: Ensure all stamping processes comply with relevant industry standards, safety regulations, and customer-specific requirements. Develop and lead Stamping Quality Management/Assurance System.
You Bring:
- 8+ years of experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Industrial Engineering required or related field 6+ years of experience with a Master’s degree or relevant certifications in quality management is a plus
- Experience: Minimum of 8+ years of experience in automotive stamping or a related manufacturing environment, with at least 3 years in a leadership role required
- Strong experience with surface quality management of automotive parts
- Advanced knowledge of metrology tools and techniques for quality inspection
- Proficient in GD&T and its application in manufacturing
- Knowledge in dimensional analysis tools and software (e.g., CMM, laser scanners, GD&T, CAD software)
- Experience with exterior sheet metal parts, including stamping, forming, and finishing processes
- Metallurgical knowledge for understanding material properties and their impact on stamping processes
- Proficient in root cause analysis and problem-solving methodologies (e.g., 8D, Fishbone diagram)
- Strong leadership skills, with the ability to train, motivate, and manage teams
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to collaborate with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and customers
- Familiarity with ISO/TS 16949 or other automotive quality management standards
- Knowledge of automotive industry standards and specifications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Metallurgical expertise or experience in working with different sheet metal materials and their impact on the stamping process
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies
- Experience in Six Sigma or other quality certifications (e.g., CQE, CQA)
- This role is based in a manufacturing plant with exposure to machinery, production lines, and possible environmental factors (e.g., noise, temperature fluctuations)
