Job Description

The Geotechnical Engineer Lead will be responsible for managing and directing geotechnical investigations, providing expert advice on ground conditions, and leading the monitoring of geotechnical parameters throughout the project lifecycle. This role requires a highly experienced professional with strong leadership capabilities and in-depth knowledge of geotechnical engineering, ensuring project safety and compliance with design specifications.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage geotechnical investigations and assessments for large-scale infrastructure construction projects, including soil sampling, borehole logging, laboratory testing, and site assessments.

  • Supervise design and execution of geotechnical monitoring programs, focusing on soil stability, foundation behavior, groundwater conditions, and ground movements during the project.

  • Oversee the interpretation of data from geotechnical monitoring instruments such as piezometers, inclinometers, and settlement gauges, ensuring accurate, real-time reporting to stakeholders.

  • Supervise and mentor junior geotechnical engineers providing technical guidance and ensuring best practices are followed in all geotechnical activities.

  • Conduct and oversee geotechnical risk assessments to identify potential issues related to ground stability, drainage, foundation design, and other geotechnical considerations.

  • Provide strategic geotechnical solutions and recommendations to mitigate identified risks and improve the construction process.

  • Collaborate with the construction team, project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to resolve geotechnical challenges and ensure alignment with design specifications.

  • Review and approve geotechnical reports, including findings from site investigations, laboratory tests, and monitoring programs, ensuring accuracy and clarity in all documentation.

  • Ensure the implementation of geotechnical quality control procedures to comply with project specifications, regulatory standards, and environmental guidelines.

  • Act as the lead point of contact for geotechnical issues, providing expert advice and communication with both technical and non-technical teams.

  • Develop and oversee the geotechnical aspects of the project schedule, ensuring all investigations, testing, and monitoring activities are completed on time and within budget.

  • Ensure compliance with safety, regulatory, and environmental standards in all geotechnical engineering practices.

  • Lead site inspections and supervise ground condition assessments during construction, advising on the best practices for construction and excavation activities.

Work Conditions:

Primarily site-based role, with some office work for report preparation, design, and analysis.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.

  • 10 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, with at least 5 years in a senior role.

  • Extensive experience with geotechnical investigations, soil testing, and ground stability assessments in large-scale infrastructure projects (e.g., roads, bridges, tunnels, utilities).

  • Strong expertise in geotechnical monitoring and instrumentation, including interpretation and reporting of ground movement, settlement, and groundwater data.

  • Proven experience leading geotechnical teams, managing multiple projects, and mentoring junior engineers.

  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to develop project timelines, budgets, and deliverables.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with experience working directly with designers, and project teams.

  • Ability to think critically and provide innovative solutions to complex geotechnical challenges in a dynamic construction environment.

  • Comprehensive understanding of local geotechnical regulations, standards, and environmental laws.

  • Experience in preparing and delivering technical reports and presentations to senior management and external stakeholders.
