Intern, Environmental Health and Safety (8-Month Term)

ERM is seeking an Intern, Environmental Health and Safety for an eight-month term to join our technical team in Toronto, ON. This role will require the candidate to work from the Toronto office 2-3 days a week. The successful candidate will be trained to safely execute project-related work and will work on a variety of interesting desktop and fieldwork projects including EHS regulatory compliance, due diligence and site investigation. Special Job Requirements
Please note: An eight (8) month consecutive work term is required. Applications from students seeking a four (4) month co-op placement will not be considered. Students are responsible for ensuring they are eligible for an 8-month work term before applying. Please discuss your work/study sequence flexibility with your academic advisor as soon as possible. Students are also responsible for ensuring all co-op requirements are adhered to and will maintain regular communications with their Advisor.
Qualifications
- Working towards a Bachelor’s degree or diploma in occupational health and safety, environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental technology, natural science or related discipline, or equivalent experience;
- Third- or fourth-year students are preferred;
- Knowledge of Federal, and Provincial environmental, health and safety regulations;
- Strong writing skills. Experience with writing comprehensive technical reports is an asset. Candidates must submit a writing sample with their application, which may include a paper or essay completed for an academic assignment.
- Previous experience in government, and/or mining, industrial, or manufacturing sectors are considered assets;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Powerpoint, Excel) is considered an asset;
- Class G Ontario driver’s license/applicable driver’s license with good standing required;
- Willingness to travel and spend time out of the office and in the field (up to 50% of the time);
- Ability to multi-task, maintain flexibility, travel, and work independently with minimal supervision; and
- Detail-oriented with mechanical aptitude and interest in developing hands-on trouble-shooting/problem-solving skills;
- Can demonstrate their interest in the EH&S field and initiative to develop skills across varied job functions while in this position;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills; and,
- Bilingual (French/English) is preferred.
Job Responsibilities:
The candidate will provide general EHS compliance support to internal teams and clients, including on-site as needed. Responsibilities of this position, may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Develop project specific Health and Safety Plans;
- Support development of health and safety programs related to a wide range of manufacturing industries including mining, technology, chemical, pharmaceutical, and food and beverage manufacturing sites;
- Develop legal registers, protocols and programs to support EHS management systems;
- Perform EHS compliance assessments at industrial and commercial facilities, and implement follow-up corrective actions to ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and local regulations;
- Assist in data interpretation and preparation of site work plans, spreadsheets, figures and technical reports;
- Participate in multiple projects concurrently within strict timeframes, scope/budget expectations, and meet high quality standards on project deliverables;
- Support permitting and permit applications/packages;
- Support environmental due diligence project teams in carrying out industrial and commercial transactions, including Phase I Environmental Site Assessments consistent with ASTM and CSA standards;
- Conduct field work, including air quality, soil, sediment, groundwater, and surface water sampling;
- Cross-collaborate with various teams across ERM Canada.
NOTE: Candidates must be able to work from the Toronto office 2–3 days per week. Local candidates in the Greater Toronto Area are preferred.
