About the Job
Note: the project has a duration of 6-7 months, where 7 months are preferred. The start date is flexible. We only place current students that need to do a mandatory internship for university.
Mission
At Farmless we’re brewing amino acid complete proteins independent of agricultural land. We’re creating a new interface between food and energy by selecting nutritious microbes that taste great and can grow on renewable energy-based feedstocks. Our fermentation platform is up to 5000 times more land efficient than animals, which allows humanity to free up vast amounts of land, rewild our planet and draw down gigatons of carbon.
Team
We're a small, highly technical team with diverse backgrounds like the Vegetarian Butcher, DSM, Noma and Perfect Day.. Our brewery, R&D, test kitchen and offices are all integrated under a single roof, optimised for high speed iteration.
Role
We are looking for a highly motivated intern who will support us in optimising fermentations at pilot (270L) scale. During this internship you will be part of an experienced team and work on the frontiers of protein fermentation. We offer our interns a unique experience.
Responsibilities
Run fermentations for protein production.
Optimize the operational parameters to maximise productivity and yield by using online sensor measurements and offline analyses.
Investigate the relationship between operational conditions, dry matter composition, and biochemical formation.
Calculate the mass balance during the process and other fermentation performance parameters.
Analyze factors contributing to repeatability within fermentations
Requirements
Current Master’s or PhD student in biological engineering, biotechnology, biochemical engineering or related areas
Experience in microbiology such as aseptic handlings, analyses
Hands on experience with fermentation tanks, ideally independent fermentation tank experience
Autonomy and self starting capabilities
Team player skills with excellent English proficiency
Rewards
Contribute to the future of protein production
Enjoy free healthy plant based lunches, snacks, and drinks.
The opportunity to truly integrate with a team of experts
We give our interns unprecedented freedom and room to grow (but in turn we accept only the very best)
About the Company

Farmless

Agriculture has taken over almost half of all habitable land on earth, pushing nature over the brink, and the world needs an affordable protein source that can be produced without the need for agricultural land. Farmless has found a way to achieve this: by brewing carbon-negative, functional proteins with a complete amino acid profile.

The Farmless process combines the ancient craft of fermentation – which has been used for millennia to brew beer and bake bread – with a modern feedstock (the scientific term for a starter liquid). Whereas most fermentation companies rely on sugar, Farmless uses a feedstock made from CO2, water, nitrogen and renewable energy – bypassing the need for agricultural land.
