Job Purpose

The Advanced Engineer, Power System Controls plays a key role in the design, development, and implementation of control software for Hyliion’s Karno Power Module. This position focuses on systems involving combustion, thermal management, pressure regulation, high-voltage, and power management. The engineer will be responsible for developing and validating control algorithms, tuning system parameters, and analyzing data to ensure performance meets engineering specifications. Additional responsibilities include preparing technical documentation, supporting root cause analysis, and ensuring timely, high-quality software delivery. The role requires cross-functional collaboration and occasional travel to support system testing and troubleshooting.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement high-quality control software for Hyliion’s Karno Power Module, which includes combustion, thermal, pressure, high-voltage and power management systems.
  • Define and conduct tests to verify software and tune control parameters to meet key performance indicators.
  • Prepare reports and technical documentation related to system performance, control strategies, and compliance.
  • Process and analyze data to verify software against engineering specifications, support root cause analysis and for optimizing performance.

  • Assist product team in defining customer requirements and generate corresponding engineering specifications.

Qualifications include:

  • Education, Experience and Certifications
    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, or Systems Engineering, or Computer Science or related field.
    • 5+ years of relevant experience.
    • Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, or Systems Engineering, or Computer Science or related field
  • Skills and Abilities
    • Knowledge and experience with genset, power plant or hybrid vehicle control systems.
    • Experience with software testing environments such as MIL, SIL,
    • Experience with Controller Area Networks (CAN).
    • Experience with PLCs or embedded systems
    • Knowledge and experience with electrical circuits, electromechanical systems and electrical wiring.
    • Good understanding of the V-model.
    • Experience with C/C++ or Python is a plus.
    • Experience with Atlassian tool suite (Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket).
    • Controls software development in MATLAB/Simulink
    • Classical and modern control disciplines.
    • Ability to work safely in labs, dynos, etc.
    • Strong teamwork
    • Proven ability in managing multiple projects, priorities, and assignments with accountability.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with cross-functional teams and prepare technical reports.
    • Position will require some travel to support testing, evaluate system performance or debug onsite issues.

 

Role Classification and Working Conditions

This is an exempt-level position. This position typically works in an office environment; and given the nature of our business is also exposed to engineering lab/operations/warehouses/production environments.

  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to travel, as needed, by plane, automobile, etc.
