Position Overview
The Tax Associate is responsible for overseeing and ensuring timely compliance with federal tax obligations, managing and supervising tax audits and official notices from authorities, and supporting the implementation of tax planning initiatives. This role supervises junior tax staff (Tax Analyst) and collaborates closely with internal and external stakeholders to maintain compliance and support the organization’s tax strategy.
Key Responsibilities
1. Tax Compliance
• Supervise and ensure timely submission of accurate information to external providers for monthly tax prepayments (i.e. withholding tax computation on debt repayments, cash repatriations data, extraordinary transactions tax related information).
• Review and validate tax prepayment calculations in coordination with Tax Analysts.
• Resolve inquiries from junior staff or external providers related to tax calculations.
• Oversee the payment of monthly, annual, and ad hoc federal taxes.
• Analyze withholding tax obligations on payments to foreign related and non-related parties.
• Ensure full compliance with FIBRA tax requirements, including the annual taxable profit computation and supporting documentation (interest deductions, FX, inflation adjustments, etc.).
• Stay current with tax regulations, including Thin Capitalization, Interest Deduction Limitations and Fixed Asset Sales, and perform related calculations.
• Supervise the preparation and review of annual tax returns and supporting documentation/computations.
• Coordinate the preparation and filing of tax refund requests.
2. Attention to Official Notices and Audits
• Analyze official notices and requirements issued by tax authorities.
• Lead the gathering and review of required documentation in response to audits or requirements, including coordination with external advisors.
• Prepare and submit files and supporting work papers on time.
• Follow up on all audits and notices until resolution.
• Maintain updated records of ongoing and closed audits.
3. Tax planning
• Perform detailed analysis related to tax planning opportunities and compliance strategies.
• Calculate annual tax provisions and support year-end financial close processes.
• Assist in the execution of strategic initiatives such as cash repatriation, dividend distributions, and refinancing activities.
• Update and maintain tax provisions computations (e.g. current and deferred taxes, interest carryforwards).
4. Generals
• Advise internal departments on federal tax matters compliance, under the supervision of the Tax Manager.
• Understand and validate tax and general accounting entries (tax provisions, intercompany transactions, VAT, equity, etc.).
• Support quarterly budget planning and forecasting processes.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in tax compliance and advisory/supervision roles.
• In-depth knowledge of Mexican tax regulations.
• Experience with multinational or multicultural organizations is a plus.
Skills
• Proficient in English (spoken and written).
• Strong computer literacy (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Knowledge of FIBRA structure and related compliance is an asset.
• Strong analytical and organizational skills.
