About the Job

Burro is the leading robotics company in the world by number of robots working outdoors in the field with real customers. Our mission is to free people from tedious work and solve the critical labor shortages faced by farmers and others that work outdoors.

To accomplish our mission, we need a world-class, diverse team where everyone feels comfortable sharing their ideas. With this in mind, we strive to create a work environment where every employee can be themselves and express their perspective – this enables us to deliver the most creative and innovative solutions to problems our customers face.

Headquartered in Philadelphia with an office in central California, and backed by top Agtech and autonomy investors, including S2G, Catalyst Investors, Translink Capital, Cibus, FPrime, Toyota Ventures, FFVC, Xplorer, and Radicle, Burro was created to solve the labor shortages facing farmers using robotics.

Burros can be described as Disney's Wall-E for agriculture and work outdoors, in a 1.0 format.  They function, today, as computer vision based autonomous ground vehicles for carrying, towing, and scouting, and are designed to lay the base for the fully autonomous future of work outdoors.  We have a growing triple digit fleet deployed in paid commercial use within vineyards, nurseries, berries, and beyond, and demand for our product is accelerating, so we are growing our team.

About you: You understand the BIG picture.  You understand how to architect systems.  You can establish block diagrams to clearly communicate what is going on in the system to break things down into manageable chunks.  You can take the voice of the customer or the Product Manager and turn that voice into a clear set of requirements, turn around and suballocate those requirements into ME, EE, SW, and System Test requirements. You understand the difference between Validation and Verification, and know what a V&V model is.  You understand how to predetermine how each requirement later needs to be validated by Design, Inspection, Analysis, or Test.   That’s the up-front Systems Engineering work.

In the tail end of the project, you understand that to deliver a quality product you need to put it through its paces.  You need to receive the product and the requirements and pull together a comprehensive test plan that delivers on the promise of those requirements.  Can we test this ourselves or do we need to outsource some of this testing?  What is the series of tests that need to be performed so, in a statistically significant way, we can achieve our goals and meet our requirements with a confidence interval that meets our reliability targets?  You understand how, if this product is going to last 5 years, what is the accelerated testing necessary to achieve that requirement.  And you are able to author test reports closing out the test program so years later we can look back on the testing and understand what was the configuration under test, what was the environment, what were the conditions of the test, what were the pass/fail criteria, and did we meet the objectives of the test.

You put yourself in the shoes of the customer.  You are entrepreneurial and collaborative. You are passionate about mobile robotics and about designing and developing systems for real-world-use.  You enjoy defeating complex problems, and love to build, tinker and create with a driven team.

  • Documentation of systems incuding block diagrams, Confluence page documentation, etc.
  • Collaborate across the hardware team, including mechanical and embedded and electrical engineers.  Then coordinate with our friends in software engineering
  • Develop comprehensive test plans to validate and verify our products

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • Over 5 years of post-academic work experience in Hardware development
