About the Job

Welcome to the future of energy

We are both an electricity retailer and a tech platform and we think there is no better way to address our greatest challenge, climate change, than with the combination of those two.

Through our proprietary tech platform, Kraken, we are changing the way people interact with their energy company - by making it approachable, low cost, easy-to-understand, and most importantly, 100% renewable.

We're looking for an Energy Markets Engineer to join our team in Houston. This role will be responsible for supporting the OEUS Risk and Trading team on technical tasks such as data engineering, model development, and building out the commercial data platform. You will work in close collaboration with traders and analysts, the US Data Team, and the group-wide global data and engineering teams.

What you'll do:

  • Developing and maintaining commercial data pipelines and tools
  • Daily support of risk and trading model development utilizing your skills in data engineering and optimization & performance
  • Creation and automation of risk workflows and processes (VaR, MtM, Valuation Engines, Pricing, etc.)
  • Collaborating with the global data and engineering team to share data and build out global reporting pipelines
  • Standardizing data feeds for ad hoc, quick analysis and maintaining analyst views
  • Monitoring and developing reporting on overnight jobs to be run prior to the start of the trading day
  • In cooperation with the risk and trading team, design and implement portfolio monitoring and market fundamental forecasting processes
  • Communicate technical knowledge across a wide range of stakeholders from team leadership to executives
  • Development of market data pipelines & time series analysis data engineering infrastructure to support regression analysis, basis/spread trading, weather forecasting, and high impact commercial data applications.

What you'll need:

  • 2 -5 years experience in a data engineering role, ideally within or supporting a commercial energy organization
  • Background in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or other relevant disciplines
  • Experience working with a modern tech stack in a fast past, big data environment
  • Experience working with SQL, Python, Kubernetes, DBT, Databricks, AWS, Airflow
  • Experience working in a collaborative, Git-based production environment, with responsibilities including testing, version control, and responsible management of production changes
  • Strong, adaptive communicator; comfortable taking initiative and working closely with traders, managers, and executives across front, middle, and back office teams in a fast-paced environment
  • We’re passionate about energy markets and welcome team members who are curious and driven — this role offers exposure to real commercial decision-making and values independence and a willingness to learn
  • Comfortable with tackling complex data & market issues both independently and as part of a dynamic team

It'd be great if you also had:

  • Experience working with analysts and traders in a commercial/trade floor environment
  • Knowledge of financial instruments (futures, swaps, options, etc.) and their use in energy markets
  • Understanding of data intensive portfolio management processes (Value at Risk, Marked to Market PnL, Quantitative Portfolio Optimization…)
  • Experience working with Monte Carlo simulations and understanding of stochastic processes use cases in forecasting
  • Experience in energy markets, specifically ERCOT power.
  • Experience in power markets fundamental forecasting, pricing, and/or valuation analysis

Why join us?

  • Innovation-Led Culture: Be part of a company that leads with innovative solutions and challenges traditional industry norms.
  • Impactful Work: Your contributions will directly influence our growth and help shape the future of sustainable energy.
  • Collaborative Environment: Work in a dynamic, supportive environment that fosters creative thinking and problem-solving.

Why else you'll love it here:

  • Great medical, dental, and vision insurance options including FSAs.
  • Paid time off — we know working hard means also being able to recharge as needed, we trust our employees to get the work done and take the time they need. Octopus offers 20 days paid vacation, 8 paid sick days, and discretionary unlimited paid time off.
  • 401(k) plan with employer match. Octopus matches 100% of contributions on the first 3% and 50% of contributions from 3-5%.
  • Parental leave. Biological, adoptive and foster parents are all eligible. We pay 16 weeks at full pay and then an additional 8 weeks at half pay.
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits.
  • Flexible working environment: This team works in our Downtown Houston Office 3 days a week. You need to shift around your schedule? You do you, we genuinely believe in work/life balance.
  • Equity Options: every Octopus employee owns part of the business. We’re a team, working together towards huge goals. Every person is crucial to our success, you should be rewarded as such.
  • Wondering what the salary for this role is? Just ask us! When on a call with one of our recruiters it's something we always cover as we genuinely want to match your experience with the correct salary. The reason why we don't advertise is because we honestly have a degree of flexibility and would never want salary to be a reason why someone doesn't apply to Octopus - what's more important to us is finding the right octofit!

If this sounds like you then we'd love to hear from you.

Studies have shown that some groups of people, like women, are less likely to apply to a role unless they meet 100% of the job requirements. Whoever you are, if you like one of our jobs, we encourage you to apply as you might just be the candidate we hire. Across Octopus, we're looking for genuinely decent people who are honest and empathetic. Our people are our strongest asset and the unique skills and perspectives people bring to the team are the driving force of our success. As an equal opportunity employer, we do not discriminate on the basis of any protected attribute. Our commitment is to provide equal opportunities, an inclusive work environment, and fairness for everyone.
