Role Overview

We are seeking a Principal Engineer to take on a leadership role within the Global Credit Technology team. This role requires a highly skilled hands-on engineer who is passionate about technology and finance. You will lead the design, development, and implementation of cutting-edge trading applications while driving the technical direction of the team.

The role reports to the Global Head of Credit Technology but is additionally directly accountable for delivery to the Credit Delivery Lead. The role provides governance around architecture, code quality, standards, tools and technology, ensuring modernisation and continuous improvement take place. The Credit application works within a low latency enterprise event driven architecture hosted on the AWS cloud with a Microsoft C# .Net backend, React front end and Java components. Whilst there is scope to shape this role, it is expected to be hands-on coding, design and architecture as well as providing leadership and driving innovation.

Role Responsibilities

• Architect and develop high-performance, scalable, and robust trading systems, tools, and platforms.

• Lead and mentor a team of engineers, providing technical guidance and hands-on coding expertise.

• Collaborate with product managers, business stakeholders, and other technology teams to define project goals and deliverables.

• Ensure the quality of the codebase through best practices, including code reviews, automated testing, and continuous integration.

• Drive innovation by identifying and evaluating new technologies and methodologies to enhance system performance and reliability.

• Ownership of the full software development lifecycle, from design to production.

• Foster collaboration with cross-functional teams to deliver integrated solutions aligned with business goals.

• Responsible for the delivery of the Credit applications to both internal and external users and be accountable for delivery to the Delivery Lead

• Communicate to senior management and stakeholders articulating technical challenges, issues, value from investing in technology.

• Communicate with the wider technology teams to coordinate interdependencies and resolve issues.

• Provide leadership across the Credit Software Engineering teams and be accountable to the Head of Software Engineering for governance on team architecture, code quality, standards, tools and technology but foster a culture of collaboration, innovation and excellence.

• Be an Agile exponent, responding to change, participating in retrospectives, ensure continuous improvement is taking place.

• Work with 3rd parties to ensure the Agile teams have a full complement and are cross-functional. Responsible for hiring within teams.

• Take part in incident management to ensure Production defects are rectified based on their criticality and severity and to a sufficient standard.

• Guide and support team to identify and escalate risks as appropriate

• Guide and support team in implementation and adherence to Change Control principles

Experience / Competences

Essential

• Proven experience as a senior/principal engineer in high-performance trading systems or similar domains.

• Strong proficiency in Java, C#, and/or React with a deep understanding of system architecture and distributed systems.

• Experience with low-latency, high-throughput messaging systems (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ, or proprietary systems).

• Expertise in cloud technologies and deployment pipelines (AWS, GCP, or Azure).

• Expertise in performance profiling and optimisation.

• Strong leadership and communication skills with experience in mentoring and guiding development teams.

• In-depth knowledge of financial markets, particularly credit markets, is a significant advantage.

• Hands-on experience with CI/CD, automated testing frameworks, and agile methodologies.

• Hands-on coding experience with the ability to define and develop solutions and frameworks.

• Experience of Application Lifecycle Management Tools and technologies such as Source Code Management; git, DevOps platforms; gitlabs, TeamCity

• Use of and working with Containerization to aid deployability, testing and loose coupling.

• Agile exponent to speed up delivery, reduce risk and provide maximum value to the end users

Desired

• Knowledge of the Trading business domain

• Knowledge or application of the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)

• Experience of GraphQL and subscription based streaming

• Actor frameworks like DAPR, AKKA, Orleans

• Experience in Java software development
