Division               Roads and Highways        Location              Cape Town         REPORTS TOThis position is responsible for the technical design of projects within the Section and providing assistance to Professional Engineers/Scientists/Other Professionals/Consultants.PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE Provide drafting services and prepare documentation for projects as well as provide other appropriate technical support.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES <ul><li>Supervise and manage small teams (Technicians, Students, Draughtsmen, Graduates)</li><li>Mentor Technicians, Graduate Technologists and/or Graduate Engineers in relevant software tools</li><li>Check the work of other team members</li><li>Develop increased design ability and quality</li><li>Draft technical reports of acceptable technical and presentational quality</li><li>Make technical decisions and provide solutions rather than one completed end result</li><li>Able to present / represent their technical work</li><li>Able to draft responses to straightforward bids – assistance sought with commercial aspects</li><li>Develop knowledge of the commercial aspects of project management</li><li>Develop understanding of Functional Unit technologies and markets</li><li>Ability to check and inspect constructed works for compliance with design and specifications</li><li>Preparation of tenders for construction including BoQ’s and specifications</li><li>Preparation of tender bids to clients including draft cost estimates</li><li>Development of internal standards and implementing them</li><li>Develop solutions to complex engineering problems</li><li>Perform design work duties under the supervision of a Professional Engineer/ Scientists/Other Professionals</li><li>Apply SMEC’s systems and procedures and ensure enforcement</li><li>Working with clients and municipal line departments to capture their requirements</li><li>Compilation of contract documentation and specification including measurement files</li><li>Client invoicing</li><li>Project auditing (if assigned role of quality auditor)</li><li>Project management</li><li>Project financial forecasting, budgets and associated resource planning</li><li>Draughting</li><li>Regular client contacts without Senior Managers</li><li>Indirectly responsible for term tender budgets</li></ul>KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS <ul><li>Quality and timelines of reporting</li><li>Planning of workload to meet deadlines</li><li>Knowledge of SMEC’s systems and procedures</li><li>Proficiency in civil design and analysis software packages</li></ul>RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE  <ul><li>Bachelor of Engineering degree/higher degree from accredited university/college</li><li>Minimum 3 years of practical experience</li><li>Clear understanding of local functional business technologies and markets</li><li>Proficient in Civil 3D, AutoCAD, or similar geometric design software</li><li>Knowledge of basic project management and the use of project management software</li><li>Professionalism</li></ul>ADDED ADVANTAGE<ul><li>Exposure to BIM workflows and digital engineering platforms</li></ul>We are proud of the brilliant minds we have at SMEC and are committed to ensuring that our people have the best opportunities and resources to learn, grow and succeed.
