About the Job

About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as a Senior Structural Mechanical Engineer

As a Senior Structural Mechanical Engineer for CFS, you will serve as an expert in structural mechanics for various projects across the company, including SPARC, ARC, and other R&D activities.

What you'll do:

  • Serve as a domain expert in structural mechanics
  • Solve complex problems and provide recommendations by providing technical leadership and collaborating with stakeholders across CFS
  • Mentor junior staff within the Structural Engineering Department and other mechanical engineers that conduct structural analysis
  • Assist Structural Engineering Department management in development, implementation and adoption of best practices, workflows, and overall strategy
  • Conduct and review structural analysis for various system designs at CFS

What we’re looking for:

  • At least a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • At least 7+ years of professional experience performing finite element analysis with multi-disciplinary teams in a product development environment
  • Strong knowledge of the fundamentals of computational structural mechanics, including non-linear materials, plasticity, fatigue, solver convergence, and contacts
  • High self-motivation and personal accountability in decision-making and team supervision.
  • Strong leadership acumen, adept at embracing challenges with minimal oversight.
  • Excellent problem-solving and creative capabilities.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the capability to engage and influence stakeholders at all organizational levels

Bonus points for:

  • Proficiency in ANSYS Workbench and SpaceClaim
  • Experience with electromagnetic and thermal FEA
  • Ability to code in Python and APDL
  • Experience pre- and post-processing of large computational models in a product development environment.
  • Familiarity with industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME BPVC) related to structural design and analysis of large structures

Must-have Requirements:

  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
