About the Job
Responsibilities and Duties
- Oversee and guide engineering consultants and general contractors in the design, planning, and implementation of electrical systems, including utility supply, substation, HV/MV/LV power distribution, lighting, backup power (generators, UPS), switchgear, grounding, and control systems
- Review and approve detailed electrical engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, and technical documentation to ensure compliance with project scope, schedule, budget, and quality standards
- Evaluate load analysis, fault current studies, short circuit calculations, protective device coordination, power quality assessments, and capacity planning done by consultants to ensure they support current and future data center uptime requirements
- Provide expert oversight in the selection and specification of electrical equipment including switchgear, UPS systems, PDUs, and emergency generators
- Review and approve redundancy strategies (N+1, 2N) to ensure required tier level reliability is achieved
- Oversee the commissioning, factory/site acceptance testing (FAT/SAT), and inspection of electrical systems and equipment to verify performance, reliability, and safety standards
- Lead the technical review of vendor submissions and guide equipment evaluations and selection decisions
- Ensure proper documentation is created and maintained for electrical systems and emergency procedures
- Verify compliance with relevant local and international codes, standards, and regulations (NEC, IEEE, IEC, NFPA, local codes)
- Drive innovation and sustainability initiatives, including energy efficiency optimization (PUE) and adoption of emerging technologies
- Facilitate effective coordination between cross-functional teams including architects, mechanical engineers, civil engineers, project managers, contractors, and vendors
- Manage relationships with electrical consultants and subcontractors throughout design and construction phases
- Develop and implement ongoing maintenance strategies, risk assessments, and mitigation plans for long-term reliability
- Provide expert troubleshooting guidance for critical electrical issues during construction and commissioning
- Establish and enforce quality assurance standards, risk mitigation protocols, and safety compliance requirements
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders to align engineering solutions with business objectives
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Master's degree preferred)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent strongly preferred
- 8+ years of experience in electrical engineering, with at least 4 years focused on data center or mission-critical facilities
- Demonstrated expertise in overseeing power system design, reliability engineering, and critical infrastructure projects
- Strong knowledge of power distribution systems, redundancy configurations (N+1, 2N), and energy efficiency best practices
- Experience representing owner's interests in data center electrical infrastructure projects
- In-depth knowledge of industry standards and codes including NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 70E, IEEE, IEC, NETA, ANSI, UL, UFC, UBC
- Familiarity with high voltage substation design, MV/LV distribution, backup power systems, and building management systems (BMS/EMS)
- Working knowledge of electrical design and modeling software (AutoCAD, Revit MEP, SKM PowerTools, ETAP, Microsoft Office)
- Experience with data center standards including Uptime Institute Tier classifications, TIA-942, and EN 50600
- Understanding of data center metrics including PUE, DCiE, and related efficiency measures
- Strong leadership and oversight capabilities
- Excellent project management, organizational, and decision-making skills
- Expert-level technical review and quality assurance abilities
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills for managing consultants and contractors
- Experience interpreting technical documentation and identifying design issues
- Strategic thinking with ability to balance technical requirements against budget and schedule constraints
- Strong negotiation and stakeholder management skills
- Capability to make critical decisions under pressure in emergency situations
- Commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement
- Ability to travel to project sites as needed
Physical and Sensory Requirements
- Mostly sedentary work; using standard office equipment including: a computer, keyboard, and telephone.
- Position is part of a remote team, with regular electronic and video communication
- The position requires 4x per year travel for company-wide meetups across US & Canada and regional meetings as needed by the department.
Salary and Benefits
- Salary: USD$150,000-$160,000 or CAD$215,000-$229,000 base salary with 30% annual target bonus
