This individual will be responsible for the design and integration of flight critical mechanical components, oil pneumatic shock struts, shimmy dampers, brakes systems, sensors, and kinematic mechanisms specific to landing gear. A core competency in this role is expertise in air spring dampers including such aspects as compression ratios, compression and rebound damper porting and valving, and seals. This role will involve design work starting at the conceptual level, maturing into full 3D modeling, FEA analysis and hand calculations, and continuing into manufacturing, testing, integration, and in service support. A strong knowledge of material selection, tolerances, coatings, bearings, input devices, seals, mechanical hardware, GD&amp;T, and drafting standards are required. Hands-on experience, a ‘get it done’ attitude, and the ability to work well with a cross-functional team towards the development of these new systems is very important. This position is rewarding, as the engineer will promptly see their ideas grow from concept to creation due to the fast pace of Joby Aviation.</p><h2>Responsibilities</h2><ul> <li>Cradle to grave design ownership from the conceptual phase through detailed design through release and manufacturing build support</li> <li>Development of complex, flight critical, landing gear mechanisms and structure</li> <li>Detailed design of shock struts and dampers</li> <li>Creation and maintenance of technical drawings and bill of materials</li> <li>Work with technicians to support manufacturing, integration, and test</li></ul><h2>Required</h2><ul> <li>B.S. in relevant discipline</li> <li>5+ years of working experience in relevant industry</li> <li>Experience designing aerospace landing gear</li> <li>Strong volumetric awareness and attention to detail</li> <li>Mastery of stay out zones, managing clashing interferences, and GD&amp;T</li> <li>Ability to design complex systems to strict aerospace standards</li> <li>Proficiency in mechanical design, materials selection, troubleshooting, and analysis</li> <li>Excellent teamwork and communication skills</li> <li>Proficiency with CAD and drawing creation</li> <li>Able to relocate permanently (position is based in Santa Cruz, CA)</li></ul><h2>Desired</h2><ul> <li>M.S. in relevant discipline</li> <li>8+ years of working experience in relevant industry</li> <li>Experience testing, tuning, and servicing shock struts and dampers</li> <li>Structural test experience</li> <li>Certification experience to FAR Part 23/25/27/29</li> <li>Experience with Dassault Systemes CATIA Part Design and Assembly Design</li> <li>Proficiency with FEM</li> <li>Familiarity with DO160 testing associated with mechanical systems </li></ul><h2>Additional Information</h2><p>Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $140,500 - $231,600/yr.
