<h1>Rover Team – Software Autonomous Lead</h1><h1>Description</h1><p>The Queen's Space Engineering Team (QSET) is a large multi-disciplinary team consisting of students from all programs within Queen’s University. QSET designs a prototype Mars Rover for participation in the University Rover Challenge (for more information please visit urc.marssociety.org/home).</p><p>If selected as the Software Autonomous Lead, you will develop the rover’s autonomous navigation stack including state machines, SLAM, motion planning, and obstacle avoidance using ROS 2. You will work closely with the Software Manager to ensure that the rover reaches its target for autonomous functionality, as well as delegate tasks to software members. To keep updated with the project, the Autonomous Lead must coordinate weekly meetings with the larger autonomous team. If you require accommodations during the interview process, please contact qset@ engsoc.queensu.ca.</p><p><strong>Application Due Date: July 24, 2025 at 10 PM</strong></p><h1>Responsibilities</h1><ul><li>Develop path planning and behavior tree logic for URC tasks. </li><li>Fuse multi sensor data (vision, GPS, IMU) for localization.</li><li>Develop simulation testbeds in Gazebo/Ignition and CI pipelines.</li><li>With the help of the rover management team run weekly autonomous meetings with general members, working towards furthering the state of the rover’s autonomous functionality.</li></ul><h1>Preferred Qualifications</h1><ul><li>Critical thinking and decision making, with a passion for engineering and design.</li><li>Effective communication and time management skills.</li><li>Interest in navigation, SLAM, or planning algorithms.</li><li>Object-oriented coding experience in either C/C++ or Python.</li><li>Basic ROS2 experience (TF, ROSCPP, and ROSPY publisher/subscriber/services, actionlib, Gazebo) is an asset.</li><li>Experience in computer vision, machine learning, or a related field is an asset.</li><li>General Linux experience.</li><li>Simple Bash (command-line) experience.</li><li>Familiarity with sensor fusion concepts or willingness to explore them. </li></ul>
