We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.<h2>Overview</h2><p>Working as a Senior Software Engineer you will be responsible for further development of infrastructure and platforms for wrangling data produced by Joby Aviation test and flight operations.     You will work with a small team of engineers to architect, build, and manage infrastructure for our large-scale <strong>data pipelines</strong>, with deployments spanning both <strong>cloud and edge environments</strong>.  This role is ideal for engineers who bring a strong <strong>software engineering mindset to infrastructure</strong>.   This position requires the ability to multi-task, adjust priorities, and thrive in fast paced situations.  The ideal candidate is energetic, meticulous, self-motivated, and passionate about enabling data-driven applications at scale.</p><h2>Responsibilities</h2><ul> <li>Design and manage scalable Kubernetes infrastructure across <strong>cloud (AWS)</strong>and <strong>edge</strong> environments for large-scale data workloads.</li> <li>Develop automation and infrastructure tooling in <strong>Python</strong>, enabling self-service deployment, monitoring, and orchestration for engineering and data teams.</li> <li>Define and manage infrastructure as code using <strong>Terraform</strong>, ensuring reproducibility and security.</li> <li>Collaborate with stakeholders to align infrastructure with dynamically evolving requirements.</li> <li>Implement robust <strong>observability</strong>, monitoring, and alerting across heterogeneous environments.</li> <li>Support <strong>visualization</strong> and presentation tools that help Scientists and Engineers realize value from data.</li> <li>Work with operations teams to <strong>diagnose and resolve complex network connectivity and bandwidth issues</strong>in remote and constrained environments (e.g., aircraft hangars, mobile units, trucks), ensuring reliable data transmission between edge devices and central infrastructure.</li> <li>Diagnose and resolve production issues, drive <strong>root cause analysis</strong>, and advocate for continuous improvement.</li> <li>Mentor engineers and <strong>champion best practices</strong> in infrastructure development and operational excellence.</li></ul><h2>Required</h2><ul> <li>University degree in computer science, computer engineering, physics, mathematics, or similar field.</li> <li>6+ years of experience in relevant industry.</li> <li>Strong system software development background, with experience building automation tools, services, or internal platforms using Python and/or Bash.</li> <li>Deep hands-on experience with Kubernetes, including both cloud-native and edge (e.g., K3s, MicroK8s) deployments.</li> <li>Proficiency in Terraform and version-controlled infrastructure as code practices.</li> <li>Extensive experience with AWS, including EKS, EC2, IAM, S3, VPC, and related services.</li> <li>Strong understanding of Linux systems administration and security best practices.</li> <li>Deep knowledge of networking, including VPC architectures, VPNs, routing, and troubleshooting techniques.</li> <li>Ability to support and work closely with a myriad of colleagues who are experts in aircraft design, systems engineering, test engineering, flight test operations, data analytics, and machine learning.</li> <li>Experience operating and supporting reproducible, scalable 24x7 systems.</li></ul><h2>Desired</h2><ul> <li>Familiarity with observability tools such as Prometheus and/or Grafana.</li> <li>Experience using Ansible for complex configuration management projects.</li> <li>Understanding of database concepts and experience with SQL and/or time series databases.</li></ul><p>Statistics show that under-represented groups, such as women and other minority groups, don’t apply to a job unless they meet 100% of the required qualifications.
