The Principal Engineer will demonstrate the benefits of approaches to development and delivery either through working as a team member or through group sessions. They should be the authority for decisions relating to standards and engineering best practices within their teams.The Principal Engineer will be passionate about software development and keen to use their technical and mentoring skills to help their development team to be successful. They should be comfortable working in agile teams, foster transparent communication, have a commitment to quality, and a focus on getting things done.Role Responsibilities<ul><li>Act as the primary technical leader and developer on a team, demonstrating strong technical competencies and acting as a dependable and high value contributor within the team such that other team members know what they should aspire to</li><li>Provide technical oversight of the analysis and design for assigned projects</li><li>Design, develop, test and oversee production software solutions, including the development of highly complex systems, and modifications to existing systems</li><li>Be able to communicate the architecture and principles behind a system to both technical and non-technical stakeholders</li><li>Support the use of preferred planning and prioritisation tooling to capture and track deliveries, identify issues and help with roadmap and iteration planning and prioritisation</li><li>Ensure the team engages in a well-defined SDLC that supports planning, prioritisation and delivery needs</li><li>Support the team through help with defining scope and guiding estimation of work to be done by leveraging previous experience</li><li>Be custodians for target state architecture and best practice within your respective development team</li><li>Identify opportunities to evolve systems towards target state architecture and direct refactoring and prioritisation to positively influence deliveries</li><li>Work alongside Team Leaders, to provide technical leadership and direction for the development team</li><li>Participate in retrospectives and seek opportunities to drive best practice</li><li>Lead the software team to deliver high quality and innovative software solutions </li><li>Provide leadership and guidance to coach, motivate and lead team members to their optimum performance levels and career development, through both gated checks like code reviews and more supportive approaches such as mentoring or identifying stretch opportunities for team members</li><li>Guide and support team to identify and escalate risks as appropriate</li><li>Work with the Team Leaders to provide time and resource estimates, identify potential areas of risk and suggest mitigating actions</li><li>Share complex technical designs or issues with non-technical stakeholders and influence their decision making where necessary</li><li>Identify tools and methodologies to improve the effectiveness of the development process</li><li>Assist and facilitate prioritisation of software defects and enhancements</li><li>Manage risks and issues effectively with timely escalation to the project stakeholders</li></ul>Experience / CompetencesEssential<ul><li>Degree or equivalent industry experience</li><li>Experience of hands on technical leadership</li><li>Experience overseeing the development of complex systems </li><li>Enterprise system experience</li><li>Leadership experience within a software delivery team</li><li>Experience of the full software development lifecycle in a technical role</li><li>Current in-depth knowledge of at least one full stack language as applicable to the role (such as Java, C#, C++, JavaScript)</li><li>Experience of a general purpose scripting language (such as Python, Perl, Ruby)</li></ul>Desired<ul><li>Excellent attention to detail, highly organised with a proactive approach</li><li>Strong analytical ability and problem solving skills</li></ul>Band &amp; Level – Manager, 7Not The Perfect Fit?Concerned that you may not meet the criteria precisely?
