With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.</p><h2>Overview</h2><p>In this role, you’ll lead Joby’s energy storage and distribution system software team. This system is responsible for safely powering the aircraft, managing high voltage systems, and providing state-of-x estimates to the pilot and control system. This team is responsible for developing, testing, and deploying all software pertaining to this system – from high level algorithms to embedded drivers.  As this software includes both C++ and model-based elements, and many aspects of this software are safety critical, the code must be DO-178C and DO-331 compliant. Achieving this will be an important objective of the role, and will be closely supported by Joby’s systems engineering and broader software organizations.</p><h2>Responsibilities</h2><p>Team Lead:</p><ul> <li>Lead and mentor a team of software and control algorithm engineers responsible for delivering battery management systems software development.</li> <li>Lead and mentor a team of battery system modelling engineers responsible for modelling battery system performance for design and controls.</li> <li>Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and refine battery system requirements, operational constraints.</li> <li>Work closely with different stakeholders to understand battery operating conditions, limitations, and BMS requirements for control and estimation. </li> <li>Develop, review, and optimize embedded software to translate BMS requirements into reliable, high-performance code.</li> <li>Perform data analysis and testing to support algorithm development and validation</li> <li>Ensure BMS software meets DO-178C and DO-331 certification standards through rigorous documentation, testing, and validation.</li> <li>Manage milestones, schedules, and deliverables for BMS software development.</li> <li>Provide technical mentorship, training, and growth opportunities for team members.</li></ul><p>IPT Lead:</p><ul> <li>Define product roadmap though collaboration with mechanical, cell, electrical engineering and aircraft system modelling team</li> <li>Represent the battery IPT at executive and department program reviews</li> <li>Develop program schedules in collaboration with program management team</li> <li>Triage manufacturing and field issues and address with on-team labor or through collaboration with hardware teams</li> <li>Negotiation, planning and execution of regulatory pathway</li></ul><h2>Required</h2><p>Team Lead:</p><ul> <li>Demonstrated success in leading software engineering teams, including mentoring, task prioritization, and performance management in a fast-paced environment</li> <li>At least 3 years of hands-on experience developing software for Li-ion battery management systems, including state estimation and fault diagnostics.</li> <li>Bachelor's degree in computer science/engineering, robotics, electrical engineering, or equivalent and 7+ years of industry experience.</li> <li>Expert-level C++, Matlab/Simulink, and Python coding skills</li> <li>Experience with collaborative software developing tools, with an emphasis on version control (git) and continuous integration</li> <li>Proficiency in developing software for real-time operating systems (RTOS), debugging embedded systems, and optimizing performance on constrained hardware.</li> <li>Strong communication and documentation skills</li></ul><p>IPT Lead:</p><ul> <li>Strong understanding of battery physics, packaging and electrical control and safety circuits</li> <li>Experience with product development program planning and budgeting</li></ul><ul> <li>Experience with RTCA standards for aircraft battery and electronics systems</li></ul><h2>Desired</h2><p> </p><ul> <li>Experience with DO-178C and/or DO-331 compliant software projects</li> <li>Advanced degree in engineering</li> <li>Familiarity with Linux</li> <li>Familiarity with Ethernet/UDP</li></ul><p> </p><p>Please still apply if you don’t meet all items in the desired section!
