Lead Gas Trader

As we scale our fleet of islanded gas-fired generation assets, real-time fuel management, balancing precision, and hedging discipline will become mission-critical. Reporting to the Head of Origination, Trading, and Market Analytics, the Lead Gas Trader will build and lead Intersect’s gas trading, physical scheduling, and balancing platform from the ground up. This role will sit at the center of our commercial operations, ensuring reliable fuel supply, managing daily burn volatility, and constructing a robust financial and physical risk management framework. This role will develop and execute a gas hedging and management strategy while coordinating with origination on long-term and short-term gas purchases and sales. Unlike traditional utility environments, our assets operate in dynamic, high-volatility settings with significant variability in expected daily burns. Managing swing risk, pipeline constraints, imbalance exposure, and basis volatility will be essential to protecting margin and ensuring operational reliability. This is a builder role: strategy, infrastructure, team, execution. Team Overview The Origination &amp; Trading team is responsible for Intersect’s revenue generation via long term contracting done on the Origination side and market optimization &amp; hedging done on the Trading side of the team. As our gas exposure grows alongside our islanded generation fleet, we are launching a dedicated in-house gas trading and scheduling function. The Lead Gas Trader will design and execute this capability, managing both financial gas hedging strategy and physical scheduling, balancing, and transport optimization. This function will directly support asset operations, power trading, and origination, ensuring fuel reliability while managing extreme price volatility and structural basis risk. What You’ll Do Build and Lead the Gas Platform<ul><li>Stand up and lead Intersect’s gas trading, scheduling, and balancing team.</li><li>Design scalable processes, controls, and infrastructure for physical and financial gas management.</li><li>Develop tools and systems to manage volatility in daily burn profiles across islanded gas engines.</li></ul>Manage Physical Gas &amp; Balancing Risk<ul><li>Oversee daily and intraday gas scheduling across interstate and intrastate pipelines.</li><li>Manage imbalance exposure, penalty risk, and operational constraints.</li><li>Optimize transport, storage, and park-and-loan arrangements.</li><li>Develop and execute strategies for swing management under highly variable load conditions.</li><li>Ensure fuel reliability during extreme weather and price events.</li></ul>Execute Financial Hedging Strategy<ul><li>Design and implement a comprehensive gas hedging program covering Henry Hub exposure, locational basis risk, swing gas exposure, and seasonal and structural spreads.</li><li>Actively manage NYMEX futures and options, basis swaps, swing swaps, and related products.</li><li>Coordinate closely with Risk to define risk limits, stress scenarios, and liquidity planning.</li></ul>Cross-Commodity Optimization<ul><li>Partner with Power Trading to optimize spark spreads and cross-commodity hedges.</li><li>Collaborate with Market Analytics to develop stochastic tools for burn forecasting, basis modeling, and volatility analysis.</li><li>Support origination on long-term fuel supply agreements and structured gas transactions.</li></ul> What You’ll Bring Deep Physical &amp; Financial Gas Expertise<ul><li>Extensive experience trading and scheduling natural gas in volatile markets with close ties to power trading.</li><li>Proven expertise in NYMEX futures &amp; options, locational basis swaps, swing swaps, and related derivatives.</li><li>Strong experience managing basis and transport risk in volatile regions such as Midcon or Waha.</li><li>Direct experience scheduling gas and managing physical and cash positions, including storage and transport contracts.</li><li>Demonstrated success managing swing risk and imbalance exposure under high variability.</li></ul>Operational Precision Under Volatility<ul><li>Experience supporting thermal generation or high-variability burn assets.</li><li>Strong understanding of pipeline constraints, penalties, nomination cycles, and operational risk.</li><li>Ability to manage liquidity and margin exposure during sustained price spikes.</li></ul>Builder &amp; Leader<ul><li>Experience standing up a new desk, platform, or function.</li><li>Hands-on leadership capability, including hiring and managing traders and schedulers.</li><li>Comfort operating without off-the-shelf systems and ability to design scalable internal processes.</li></ul>Strategic &amp; Collaborative<ul><li>Ability to translate complex market rules and asset constraints into executable strategy.</li><li>Strong communicator across engineering, development, asset management, and risk teams.</li><li>Experience working across storage, renewables, thermal generation, and load portfolios.</li></ul> Qualifications <ul><li>12+ years of natural gas trading and scheduling experience.</li><li>Education in mathematics, engineering, science, economics, or business is preferred.</li></ul> Total Rewards Compensation: $292,500 to $337,500 (total compensation includes base salary + bonus in USD)<div> </div>Equity: Beyond your salary, you’ll receive an Equity Grant, giving you a meaningful stake in our parent company. Health &amp; wellness: 100% premium coverage for you and your dependents on medical, dental, and visionTime to recharge: Unlimited PTO, plus two company-wide breaks (Fourth of July &amp; end of year)Family support: Up to 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave, plus 6 additional weeks for birth parents; access to family planning and family care support through Carrot and MavenMental health: Free access to Spring Health, including 5 free therapy and psychiatry sessions, plus a Headspace account for mindfulness and meditation through our physical health vendor, Wellhub+Perks &amp; extras: $150 monthly food stipend, $150 monthly reimbursement for cell phone and internet, pet insurance allowance, full home office setup, free access to UrbanSitter with $625 in quarterly company-paid credits, ActiveHero, and One Medical Intersect maintains a work environment free from discrimination, one where all employees are treated with dignity and respect.
