About the Job

The X-ray Imaging Group (IMG) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in biomedical imaging and image processing to develop advanced processing pipelines and methods for neuroimaging.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of scientists conducting a wide range of research with state-of-the-art tools. The IMG operates three beamlines equipped with world-leading full-field imaging instruments, including ultrahigh-speed imaging. The group also develops end-to-end scientific software, data analysis, and interpretation methods. These instruments and techniques support APS user programs and beamline scientists working in materials science, geology, and biology.

The brain is among the most complex structures known, containing over 89 billion neurons, each forming connections with approximately 7,000 others. Understanding and mapping these connections is a monumental challenge that requires imaging entire organs at extremely high resolutions. High-resolution tomographic measurements at a synchrotron facility aim to complement electron microscopy measurements.

Research will be conducted at 2-BM, a fast micro-tomography beamline. Achieving sub-micron resolution of entire organs demands optimized data pipelines and methods to handle and visualize the resulting datasets. Additionally, beamline hardware must be optimized to ensure the highest data quality while preserving sample integrity.

    Position Requirements

    • This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in engineering, biomedical science, biology, physics, or a related field with an emphasis on biomedical image processing at the PhD level with zero to five years of employment experience.

    • Hands-on experience with a tomography beamline is an asset.

    • Expertise in Python or other scientific programming languages.

    • Expertise in data processing, preferably with a focus on tomography.

    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

    • Good collaboration skills and be able to work with a team.

    • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

    • Experience in machine learning/deep learning methods.

    • Experience in software development.

    • Experience in electron microscopy and biological sample preparation.
