About the Job
Remora is hiring an Electrical Controls Engineer to lead the development of the control systems within our mobile carbon capture device. This role will be crucial in designing, programming, and testing the system’s control architecture ensuring the efficient operation of the device from concept to production. You will play a key role in the development of hardware and software interfaces, as well as systems integration, while ensuring that design deliverables meet aggressive timelines.
We're building carbon capture for trains and trucks. We generate revenue for railroads and trucking companies by extracting, purifying, and selling CO2 from their exhaust. Our technology can capture up to 90% of the CO2 in the vehicle's exhaust, while also reducing soot, particulate matter, and NOx.
We've partnered with some of the largest railroads and trucking companies, including Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern, Ryder, and Werner. We've now raised $117 million from prominent investors, including Lowercarbon Capital, Valor Equity Partners, Union Square Ventures, First Round Capital, and Y Combinator.
Responsibilities:
Plan & Develop
- Lead design reviews and collaborate on the development of control system architectures and strategies.
- Develop control algorithms, create control system models, and participate in system integration across the entire system.
- Design controls hardware architecture, identifying devices and components to achieve controls strategy. Create and maintain electrical schematics. Define electrical power and software signals necessary for system functions.
- Conduct system testing, pre-production verification, validation, and control system release.
- Set strategy, goals, and delivery timelines for control system design and ensure sub-system requirements are met.
Execute
- Leverage your strong problem-solving skills, technical expertise, and leadership abilities to drive the R&D of the control systems within the device.
- Partner with mechanical, electrical, and software teams to ensure seamless integration of control systems and device subsystems.
- Provide hands-on involvement in system testing, calibration, and debugging in collaboration with subject matter experts and suppliers.
Collaborate & Communicate
- Act as a key point of contact for the control system within the engineering team and provide regular progress updates.
- Foster a collaborative and creative environment within the team, ensuring alignment with Remora’s goals and mission.
- Work closely with suppliers to ensure control system components are delivered on time and meet the project’s quality standards.
Design & Innovate
- Generate and document control system requirements, electrical wiring and panel diagrams, and provide design direction based on regulatory standards, internal guidelines, and new innovations at Remora.
- Help shape new standards and work with the team to create solutions that are both effective and scalable.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- 7+ years of experience in control system design, programming, implementation, testing, and commissioning.
- Proven experience with control systems for large-scale systems, including PLCs (e.g., Omron/Sysmac), SCADA, or embedded systems. Including device and component identification and selection, as well as communication protocols such as EtherCAT, CAN, Profibus, or Modbus.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as ladder logic, structured text, Python C, or C++, with experience in control system software development.
- Familiarity with bench and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and system-level validation.
- Experience with designing control systems for industrial equipment, specifically in applications related to HVAC, automation, or energy systems. Including safety controls and fault management.
- Experience developing electrical architecture, creating and maintaining schematics, along with panel and wiring layout.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams and communicate complex technical concepts clearly.
Preferred Requirements:
- Experience in control systems for mobile vehicles or heavy-duty equipment, including truck, automotive, or industrial machinery.
- Experience with high voltage and high-power systems.
- Experience with sensor integration and feedback control in systems like pressure control, temperature regulation, or fluid dynamics.
- Familiarity with control system standards, including safety systems (SIL) and industry-specific certifications.
- Experience with simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink for control system design and testing.
- A track record of working in a startup or fast-paced environment, contributing to the development of first-of-its-kind technologies.
Logistics:

Remora

Remora is an early-stage climate tech startup, turning 2 million semi-trucks into carbon removal devices backed by Chris Sacca and Y Combinator. Our device captures the carbon emissions from semi-trucks. We sell the captured carbon dioxide to concrete producers and other end users, helping companies earn new revenue while meeting their climate commitments.

To date, 38% of the Fortune Global 500 have pledged to slash their emissions. For many of these companies, there is no way to meet these commitments without cutting supply chain emissions from semi-trucks.

That’s why many of the world’s largest fleets have signed up to use our technology. We’re working with top trucking companies and some of the world's most recognizable Fortune 100 companies.

Our work aims to develop, implement, and research engineering practices, designs, and methods that support social and environmental justice.

Our founders include a former EPA scientist who pioneered mobile carbon capture during her Ph.D., and a former diesel mechanic turned engineer who built electric semi-trucks for some of the world’s largest automotive companies.
