Job Purpose
As an Advanced Engineer, Software at Hyliion, you will play a pivotal role in leading and driving innovation within the energy industry, all while ensuring the reliability of our cutting-edge KARNO generator technology. In this role, you will have significant ownership over the design, development, and deployment of advanced software algorithms for our industrial computing platform. This software will control and optimize our next-generation energy solutions, all while being an elegant interface for the customer integration experience. Your work will directly contribute to the efficiency, sustainability, and scalability of our KARNO product portfolio, and directly empower our mission to transform the global energy landscape.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Design and develop high-quality embedded code for the Karno Generator System.
- Work with software and hardware engineers in a collaborative product development team environment to architect, design and implement Best-In-Class Electrification and Software products.
- Efforts will include creating requirements, specifications, and test documents with Safety, Testing and Quality as critical elements from the start of any software project
- Develop and rapidly deploy software products for hardware testing.
- Own direct controls and software products from start to finish, overcoming any obstacle in the way.
- Report and track issues that arise in deployed complex systems, as well as on the test stands that developed them.
- Participate in the design and implementation of the Hyliion CI/CD environment, which consists of automated build and regression testing in a simulated environment, and deployed environments.
- Work closely with all teams on our ISO26262 and UL compliant development environment as we drive our generator into the global energy sector.
- Design and maintain software architectures for embedded computing systems in industrial PC environments
- Develop and manage APQP documentation including FMEAs and DVP&Rs.
- Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned, needed, or required for the business.

Qualifications include:
- Education, Experience and Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or related field.
- 3+ years of experience developing technical products and working in a team environment.
- Proven track record of deploying successful and reliable software across any of the various environments; including industrial, aviation, military, automotive, or commercial applications
- Skills and Abilities
- Strong follow-through and self-starting nature driven with a entrepreneurial mindset
- Strong positive personality with a proven track-record of doing whatever it takes.
- Experienced in writing and implementing low level drivers
- Experienced in developing register-based command structures for communication protocols such as Modbus and custom UDP-based implementations
- Experienced in a setting up cross-compilation toolchains and development environments for building and debugging software in embedded Linux systems
- Experienced in common control communication protocols like CAN
- Experienced with developing control software in C/C++
- Experienced with memory management and optimization in C++
- Experienced with QT or equivalent GUI development platforms for C++
- Experienced developing python-based software applications.
- Experienced with version control systems such as Git and project tracking tools like Jira.
- Familiar with modern UI/UX best practices
- Familiar with High Voltage Systems
- Familiar with Simulink software development is a plus.
- Willingness to work hands-on with electronics and hardware
- Willingness to work in the field to develop software on the fly if required.
- Willingness and ability to work more than 8 hours a day to ensure that deadlines are achieved; weekly hours may regularly be between 50-60 during busy time periods.
- Ability to work well in a high-paced environment, set and meet appropriate deadlines.
- Position will involve travel (10-15% of time) to visit, work with, and evaluate engineering providers and hardware suppliers.
Role Classification and Working Conditions
This is a salaried, exempt-level position. This position typically works in an office environment; and given the nature of our business is also exposed to operations/warehouses/production environments.

- Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to travel, as needed, by plane, automobile, etc.
