Job Description
This role is responsible for providing technical capabilities to support material control and accounting of special nuclear material (SNM) used in the operation of the TRISO-X Facility, a uranium fuel fabrication facility. Facility operations used to process, handle, and store SNM will be licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) under 10 CFR 70, supported by applicable sections of 10 CFR 51, 20, 71, 73, and 74, among others.
Job Profile Tasks/Responsibilities
- Develop/review/revise/implement material control and accounting programs and procedures.
- Identify, interpret, and apply material control and accounting regulations, consensus standards, and best practices that pertain to site operations and management of nuclear materials. Create, document, and manage related technical requirements.
- Support planning and preparation activities for the periodic physical inventory of SNM in accordance with pertinent regulations and the Fundamental Nuclear Material Control Plan.
- Investigate, identify corrective actions, and resolve material control and accounting issues and anomalies.
- Support the Item Control program to track and monitor SNM in the facility through definition of items of SNM, approval of new container types, container and location identification methods (unique ID number, bar codes, etc.), container contents, and use of tamper indicating devices.
- Perform Item Monitoring activities to verify the accuracy of the SNM accounting database by conducting periodic inspections and/or measurements of individual items in storage or process areas.
- Administer the Tamper Indicating Device (TID) program to ensure SNM measured values are protected, to facilitate physical inventory activities, and to ensure that SNM has not been removed or container contents changed without following proper procedures. Program activities include device selection, procurement, distribution, application, removal, destruction, inventory, and record keeping of TIDs.
- Perform physical inventory calculations using operational data and reconcile physical inventory data against accounting book records.
- Oversee and/or support instrument selection, performance specification development, procurement, installation, use, maintenance, and periodic testing/calibration of nuclear measurement equipment.
- Perform initial calibrations, qualifications, and certifications for instruments and methods.
- Provide technical oversight for nuclear measurements and non-destructive assay methods, techniques, and equipment; data collection; and routine data entry.
- Provide direction, mentoring, training, and evaluation of personnel assigned to support the material control and accounting program to ensure nuclear measurement equipment is operated safely, reliably, in control, and produces data of the requisite quality.
- Support regulatory interactions and inspections conducted by the NRC and IAEA.
- Collaborate with others to prepare responses to questions from regulatory authorities.
- Consult with and advise operations, maintenance, and engineering personnel on item control and/or nuclear measurement matters and the impacts of new or proposed changes to processes, procedures, and facility designs/modifications.
- Conduct surveillances, inspections, walk-downs, investigations, and audits/assessments of licensed activities and unusual incidents to ensure compliance with approved regulatory licenses, permits, and procedures.
- Develop/revise/deliver regulatory training to operations, maintenance, and other personnel.
- Provide support to the emergency response team.
- Participate in regulator and/or industry led regulatory activities.
- Maintain professional demeanor and behavior at all times in all forms of communication.
- Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
Job Profile Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university required.
- Zero to two years of experience with nuclear material safeguards, physical inventory protocols, item control, and measurement systems/controls.
Location: 151 Lafayette Drive, Suite 300, Oak Ridge, TN
Work Site Expectations: 5 days a week in office
Travel: 10%
Hours: 8:00am-5:00pm, Mon-Fri
Compensation
As required by Maryland and other applicable state law, X Energy, LLC (X-energy) lists the expected compensation range for a publicly advertised job opportunity based upon the job requirements (e.g. education/training, experience, skill sets, etc.). Individual candidates who meet the job requirements for the posted position will be offered a salary within this range based on their respective levels of education/training, experience, and other qualifications unique to them. Salary ranges may vary based on the specific office location and region referenced in the posting to take into consideration differences in cost of living and may not be reflective of all regions.
