About the Job

About Us

We are Sila, a next-generation battery materials company. Our mission is to power the world’s transition to clean energy. To create this future, our team is building a better lithium-ion battery from the inside out today. We engineer and manufacture ground-breaking battery materials that significantly increase the energy density of batteries, while reducing their size and weight. The result? Smaller more powerful batteries that can unlock innovation in consumer devices and accelerate the mass adoption of electric cars to eliminate our dependence on fossil fuels. We're tackling one of the biggest challenges of our time every day, and together we're redefining what's possible. Are you ready to be a part of a team committed to changing the world?

Who You Are

Are you a thoughtful, creative, diligent, and curious battery modeling scientist or engineer?

Or perhaps you have not been exposed to battery modeling, but you have extensive experience in software development or data science?

Are you excited at the prospect of helping to build the next generation of battery materials and technologies? Sila Nanotechnologies is seeking a battery modeling scientist or software development engineer (multiple internship positions available) to:

  • Help us build a transformative battery modeling interface
  • Help develop electrochemical models and methods to understand the voltage vs charge characteristics of various chemistries
  • Design and deploy electrochemical data analysis pipelines on a live database
  • Leverage key insights from our battery models to accelerate learning cycles and reduce the cost of empirical R&D

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Spend 6+ months onsite at Sila, to work exclusively on the assigned project; this is not a position for students only available for summer months
  • Work closely with a scientist for technical aspects and also with a larger cross-company team of diverse backgrounds to discover and communicate knowledge for the long term development of our next generation battery materials
  • Help build and deploy data pipelines to automate battery analysis
  • Help us build responsive, modular & stable UIs for non technical audiences to interact with our battery models
  • Invest in our values and champion them as we grow

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • BSc (or preferably MSc/currently enrolled in a M.S or PhD program) or equivalent research experience with a focus in either
    • A) software engineering, data science, computation chemistry or a related field
    • B) Materials science, chemical engineering or a related field with experience in building data analysis pipelines
  • [Preferred] Experience using physics based battery modeling tools (Pybamm, comsol, Ansys, etc)
  • [Preferred] Experience with data engineering tools & techniques, including SQL database design (e.g. Snowflake), and data pipeline development & deployment practices (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, Airflow, CD/CI)
  • [Preferred] Experience with front-end and back-end development (full-stack), UI/UX design principles, and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker) for deploying and managing applications.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical findings to diverse audiences
  • Experience in collaborative problem solving: share knowledge, ideas, resources, and strategies in order to solve challenging scientific problems

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Move long distances (such as from building to building) and be stationary for extended periods of time
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment, such as a laptop, copier/printer, etc. in a fixed location

The starting base pay for this role is between $25/hr and $39/hr at the time of posting. The actual base pay depends on many factors, such as education, experience, and skills. Base pay is only one part of Sila’s competitive Total Rewards package that can include benefits, perks, and equity.  The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for overtime.
