Protection & Control Engineers are some of the most technically competent and knowledgeable in the SPD business. As an engineer you will deal with the most challenging technical aspects of our business operations and are regularly called upon to provide resolution whenever things go wrong, ensuring we provide safe, efficient and reliable energy to 2Million Customers across Central and Southern Scotland, supporting the UK goal to reach Net Zero
What you’ll be doing
You will sit within the Technical Support team, the P&C team are responsible for supporting the entire SPD business across 6 district areas with the delivery of their large CAPEX and customer-funded portfolio of projects.
In addition to the district-managed workload, Licence Programmes are also responsible for their own programme of protection modernisation deliverables. The P&C engineers take responsibility for identifying the focus of attention, the approach to achieving technically feasible solutions, the suitability of design drawings as received and for the execution of the commissioning phase on site.
Protection & Control engineers have a “can-do” attitude and are considered “self-starters” who identify and resolve technical problems before they become more significant issues.
The role is a technical one. Based in substation environments remote from office locations, the team are required to move with the times and be able to continually apply first-principle learnings to the adoption of new technologies whenever the business decides. This role is one of continuous learning and applicants should be able to demonstrate both their interest in the subject and a willingness to continually push boundaries.
The role of an EN6 P&C engineer is seen as the elite level of engineering within our business and typically generates interest amongst those who already have sound knowledge of electrical networks (SAPs / Operational Staff) and who want to level-up. Protection Engineers carry all of the responsibilities of engineers, project managers and SAPs from the delivery environment but in addition, they are expected to develop a level of technical knowledge and capability that is far above this level.
In addition to the requirement for an expert level knowledge of electrical distribution networks, Day-to-day activities require holders of the position to have: Expert knowledge of modern technology (Line-differential Unit Protection, IEC 61850, Goose Messaging, a wide variety IED technologies); An ability to understand and integrate legacy technology (Oil circuit breakers, electromechanical relays, pilot cables); and a sound understanding of communications technology (X21, C37.94, IEC 60870 RTU technology, fibre networks, cyber security compliance). They are also required to become experts in the operation of complex test instruments such as: T&R Equipment ADM200; Megger SMRT46; Megger Sverker 900, Megger MRCT and any new products that are identified for use on our network.
In order to maximise efficiency and capability, all team members are expected to develop themselves through training, to become network authorisation holders to a level of senior authorisation and 33kV and below.
What you’ll bring
Expert knowledge of Distribution Protection systems
Sound knowledge of RTU/Telemetry/Control gateway systems and associated communications systems and protocols
Working knowledge of Energy Networks policies, procedures and working practices.
Working knowledge of health, safety and environmental legislation.
Awareness of network development policies and procedures.
Well Developed customer service skills.
Knowledge of network and business data and network management systems.
Innovative in applying the latest technologies.
Project, contract & SLA management and general commercial & regulatory awareness.
Sound negotiation & communication skills.
Ability to devise solutions to complex problems/challenges.
At least 3 years of experience in a protection related environment
Broad operational experience preferred, e.g. spanning Distribution Operations, Protection, SCADA & Telecoms
Senior Authorised at 11kV & 33kV or working towards
