Position Summary
The position is expected to coordinate and perform design and development engineering, lead warranty solutions, and implement cost reduction initiatives. Core activities include drawing mark-ups, tolerance stack-up analysis, and fastener & joint analysis. Typical product engineering functions include scientific problem solving related to manufacturing or product performance issues, communication of design or assembly concerns between functional teams, and leadership in driving product and process improvements.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
Standard Duties:
40% – Leads coordination and alignment for Design for Manufacturability and Design for Assembly (DFM/DFA) to ensure new and revised designs are robust and aligned with best practices for product assembly.
30% – Leads engineering problem-solving activities related to plant-specific issues.
20% – Leads and drives design cost reduction discussions and follow-ups with all key stakeholder departments for valve products.
10% – Leads brainstorming activities for future design changes, including initial engineering feasibility reviews.
Performs a full range of technical work, including assignments requiring specialized qualifications or achievements.
Lead Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM/DFA) activities across the Saltillo Campus.
Develop design solutions for manufacturing issues, warranty concerns, and necessary cost reductions.
Present and promote new design proposals to BorgWarner and customer engineering teams.
Process and track designs within BorgWarner and customer engineering change management systems.
Handle multiple complex design proposals and changes simultaneously.
Conduct complex tolerance stack-up studies at the system and component level.
Communicate effectively across functional groups (product engineering, CAD, CAE, application engineering, quality, assembly, manufacturing, etc.) and global locations (Seneca, SC; Darmstadt, Germany; Auburn Hills, MI; and multiple sites in Asia).
Analyze and align DFMEAs and PFMEAs.
Exchange information with relevant departments to optimize product and production processes – DfA (Design for Assembly); DfM (Design for Manufacturing); DtC (Design to Cost).
Analyze drawing deviations for functional risk and/or acceptability. Approve or reject design deviations based on engineering analysis.
Collaborate with suppliers to improve quality, address non-conformances to drawings, and develop cost-reduction design improvements.
Create, review, and edit product drawings for design enhancement.
Support production with expertise in resolving product, design, and assembly issues.
Conduct root cause analysis and implement effective solutions.
Utilize data mining tools (Python, MATLAB, etc.) to solve warranty recalls, mitigate warranty risks, and address product performance issues in manufacturing.
Knowledge / Skills
Familiar with valve systems and manufacturing processes.
Familiar with driveline systems and manufacturing processes.
Knowledge of stamping, cleanliness, and fastening specifications.
Understanding of financial aspects of machining and manufacturing processes.
General metallurgy knowledge preferred.
Ability to read engineering drawings and apply GD&T.
Self-motivation and proactive work habits preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Strong analytical ability and proven problem-solving experience required.
Professional verbal and written communication skills required.
Additional Information
Occasional travel may be required (up to 5%).
Safety and Physical Requirements
All employees are responsible for knowing, understanding, and complying with safety policies and procedures.
PPE must be worn when required in designated campus areas.
Ability to lift up to 35 lbs. (16 kg) to shoulder height on occasion.

Required Education & Experience
Four-year bachelor’s degree in an engineering field required (Mechanical Engineering preferred).
5+ years of experience in automotive product engineering and manufacturing.
2+ years of experience with DFMEA and PFMEA.
2+ years of experience in tolerance stack-up and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
2+ years of statistical analysis experience.
