About the Job
Distributed Solar Development, LLC (DSD) is seeking to fill the role of Solar Commissioning Engineer in our quickly growing and industry leading team. The Solar Commissioning Engineer works closely with the project managers starting with a project nearing mechanical completion, configures monitoring systems, reviews and approves electrical testing documentation, troubleshoots equipment and monitoring system issues, occasionally performs hands-on field work and prepares projects for handoff to the asset management teams.
Essential Responsibilities
The Solar Commissioning Engineer will have hands-on PV engineering or PV technician role with construction experience in commercial and/or utility scale solar PV projects. They will have a strong background in PV electrical system design, electrical testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
The role of Solar Commissioning Engineer requires extremely high attention to detail and documentation, the ability to manage time and priorities, communicate clearly with individuals from different technical backgrounds, and the ability to quickly shift focus between various projects as needed. Someone who is self-motivated, hard-working, works well without supervision, and excited to function in a collaborative team environment will enjoy working at DSD.
Essential responsibilities include:
- Configure the project modeling in our monitoring platform
- Review and approve electrical testing reports
- Provide remote phone (and occasional in-person) support to contractors when troubleshooting equipment issues and data communications from meters, monitoring and other devices
- Accurately complete project commissioning documentation and prepare pre-commissioning reports
- Work closely with the project managers and construction managers to ensure commissioning activities are scheduled and executed
Required Qualifications
TECHNICAL
The ideal candidate must be able to:
- Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot:
- Commercial PV inverters
- 3-Phase electrical metering equipment
- Industrial communications and Data Acquisitions Systems (DAS) which use various protocols over RS-485, CAT5/6 & fiber media.
- PV monitoring and other electrical equipment typical of commercial and utility PV systems
- Remotely troubleshoot technical issues while directing other individuals to make equipment adjustments in resolving problems.
- Use plant control and monitoring systems to diagnose problems and monitor project performance.
- Read and interpret electrical drawings and equipment documentation.
- Understand and critically evaluate electrical testing documentation relating to equipment in solar PV plants.
EXPERIENCE & TRAINING
- Strong electrical, electronic, communications and mechanical troubleshooting skills required for working with equipment found in commercial and utility PV plants
- Technical Diploma or bachelor’s degree in electricity, electronics or a related field
- Working knowledge of the applicable National Electric Code (NEC) as it relates to PV Plants
- Safety practices and knowledge of NFPA 70E and OSHA requirements including LOTO, Arc Flash, etc.
- Must have a valid state driver’s license and clean driving record.

- Strong work ethic, be a self-starter and work remotely with little to no supervision
- Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
- Strong level of attention to detail and organization
- Strong electrical and construction safety mentality
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Willingness to aid in the generation of better process and tools, creating initiatives to increase efficiency of data collection and analysis.
- Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment
Desired Qualifications
- In-depth understanding of the AlsoEnergy monitoring equipment including PowerTrack configuration and troubleshooting skills.
- Demonstrated competence using electrical and mechanical testing and hand tools including but not limited to multimeters, I-V curve test units, megger testers, torque wrenches, etc. as needed
- Electrician License (Journeyman or higher)
- NABCEP Certified PV Installer
- NETA testing training
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
- NFPA 70e Training
- Familiarity with programming OCPDs for coordination
- Familiarity with the Procore construction management platform
Work Environment
The person in this position will mostly work remotely at a desk in an office or home-office environment, however, occasional work will be needed at PV project sites during and after construction, in weather conditions found at the project location. Some long days with occasional overnight travel may be required.
At PV project sites, the person in this position:
- Will wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety shoes, gloves and safety glasses at all times as required by the job tasks and conditions.
- Will need to work safely around high voltages and currents.
- May need to perform work at various heights using ladders, aerial lifts, scaffolding, or other approved working platforms.
- May need to climb ladders, stairs, work on rooftops and able to work on their feet for long periods of time and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
Additional Eligibility Requirement DSD will only employ those who are legally authorized to work in the United States for this opening.
