About the Job

About the role
You have the opportunity to join MZT at a crucial juncture in our company's evolution - transitioning from an innovative R&D startup into a global player ready to implement and scale our DAC technology. As a development engineer, you will be instrumental in guiding the ideation, design, development and implementation of key test and validation equipment across our DAC solutions.

Reporting across R&D and engineering-delivery, this is a key role where you will work hands-on with scientists, engineers, operators, and the wider product team. This role requires knowledge of a broad range of technical skills backed with particular experience developing and deploying systems in test and development environments. This role requires hands-on experience and an aptitude for working with new and novel systems.

This role will be based primarily in our London headquarters, with periodic assignments to our various emerging UK sites, local and global suppliers, and further international sites as we expand globally.

What you'll be doing

• Operate and support the management of multiple test rigs as our test and development site grows. Identify problems, troubleshoot fixes and implement upgrades from design through to physical install on-rig.
• Build equipment and sensor registers, manage calibrations of transducers and devices, and create tools to help facilitate round-the-clock operations.
• Manage engineering and technical stores, working closely with the lab and facilities teams to coordinate and manage site operations and sequencing of tests.
• Support systems design (mechanical, electrical, control) of a variety of test stand types ranging from proof-of-concept demonstrators through to automated larger scale process validation platforms.
• Translate learnings taken at lab & demonstration scale through to designs that can be implemented at full product scale.

What you'll need to be successful in this role

• Adaptability and willingness to work in a dynamic environment, with experience working with ambiguity
• Bachelor's/HND in engineering (mechatronic, mechanical, electrical, or equivalent)
• Experience working in a general engineering capacity - cross-functional, hands on skills are a must-have. Apprenticeships and/or other backgrounds are also considered and encouraged.
• Experience of device (or system) characterisation, manufacture and testing, and familiarity with troubleshooting and interrogating test systems or results.
• Experience contributing to technical projects in development / R&D environments
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to proactively implement practical solutions
• Good communication skills, with the ability to understand requirements and problems from the team, and find solutions
• Team-oriented mindset with experience working across different technical disciplines

Ideally you'll also have

• Exposure to the carbon capture or clean energy sector, demonstrating familiarity with industry challenges and opportunities.
• Hands-on experience and a proven track record of delivering test beds or rig-based systems.
• Experience working externally with equipment suppliers and research partners
• Ability to interpret P&IDs.
• Familiarity with CAD software (SOLIDWORKS) for mechanical design.
• Understanding of electrical controls and instrumentation hardware & a grounding in the fundamentals of process chemistry, fluids handling and hydraulics.

What we can offer you

• 30 days of Annual Leave
• 3 months Paternity/Maternity Leave
• £500 annual Personal Development Grant
• Unlimited mental health support
• Employee Share Options Scheme
• Christmas holidays office closure
• Cycle to work scheme
• Employer-matched contributions to global re-wilding programme
• Opportunities to directly impact where our company is headed
• A high-growth, high-trust environment that encourages bold creativity

Mission Zero Technologies

MZT is an early-stage start-up pioneering a breakthrough Direct Air carbon Capture (DAC) technology that can scrub CO2 from the air using a fraction of the energy compared to incumbent technologies and can be deployed anywhere with a power supply. In the past two and a half years, MZT has evolved its technology from concept to pilot plant scale, successfully raising over £8m from a mixture of private and government funding. MZT’s technology is a hybrid of approaches, combining efficient solution-phase capture of CO2 with a continuous and compact electrochemical separation technology.

Mission Zero and its work is guided by its principles of bold curiosity, problem solving acumen and hope for the future. We strive to realise a world where humanity has new tools to fight climate change, remove CO2 permanently from the atmosphere and produce everyday products such as concrete blocks or fuels from atmospheric carbon emissions. To do this we need to realise a decentralised Gt supply chain for CO2 sourced directly from the atmosphere.
