Position Summary
The Community Food Co-op's Meat Department Manager oversees all aspects of the department, including staff management, product selection, acquisition, and merchandising. This role ensures alignment with sales, margin, and customer service objectives while maintaining food safety and regulatory compliance. The Meat Department Manager also plays a strategic role in the store’s financial success and collaborates with leadership on long-term goals.
Wage Range: $27.95 – $31.07
Schedule: Varies, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Reports to: Store Manager
General Responsibilities:
Customer Service
- Model and enforce excellent customer service within the department and throughout the Co-op.
- Train staff on customer service expectations and food safety practices.
- Respond to customer inquiries and comment forms promptly and professionally.
- Ensure staff understand and communicate store policies effectively.
Financial Management
- Meet department sales, margin, and budgetary goals.
- Monitor and control costs, including shrink management and accurate receiving logs.
- Maintain pricing structures aligned with financial objectives.
- Work with the Pricing Manager and PMT to ensure accurate PLUs and pricing in the POS system.
Operations & Food Safety
- Oversee daily operations, including ordering, receiving, inventory management, and equipment maintenance.
- Establish efficient work routines and uphold food safety and sanitation standards.
- Conduct safety inspections and address hazards proactively.
Merchandising & Product Management
- Develop and maintain merchandising standards, including product mix, category management, and signage.
- Ensure product quality and availability while overseeing promotional purchasing programs.
- Collaborate with the Store Manager on display strategies and department aesthetics
Staff Supervision & Training
- Hire, train, and supervise department staff, ensuring clear expectations and adherence to procedures.
- Conduct follow-up training and regular team meetings to support staff development.
- Complete staff evaluations and encourage professional growth opportunities.
- Promote staff participation in departmental decisions and foster a positive team environment.
Leadership & Strategic Planning
- Participate in leadership meetings and collaborate on storewide initiatives.
- Develop and implement department goals in line with financial and operational objectives.
- Stay informed on industry trends and best practices.
Additional Responsibilities
- Keep the Store Manager informed of any issues, challenges, or opportunities.
- Assist with special order systems and ensure efficient department functioning.
- Clearly explain the Co-op's membership system while promoting and upholding its Principles and Mission.
- Perform other tasks assigned by the Store Manager.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Prior experience in a retail meat department or similar food service environment.
- Supervisory or management experience preferred.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, especially under pressure.
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to handle customer concerns effectively.
- Strong financial acumen, including budgeting and margin management.
- Knowledge of food safety regulations, HACCP certification required.
- Ability to track and manage detailed information efficiently.
- Flexibility and adaptability to meet changing business needs.
- Proficiency in retail technology, including POS systems, spreadsheets, and inventory software.
- Ability to work closely and cooperatively with others.
- Current Food Worker Card required.
Physical Requirements
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Bend, stoop, twist, and lift loads up to 60 lbs.
- Push and pull carts weighing up to 100 lbs.
- Work in cold environments such as freezers and coolers.
- Operate equipment such as pallet jacks, forklifts, and balers.
